FRoM THE ARCHIvE...

This November Cranes Today magazine will be 50 years old. To celebrate our golden anniversary we are raiding our archives to revisit some classic issues from the last 50 years. This month we return to the Nineties again, to March 1992. The technology- themed cover is eye-catching, although to our eyes it looks more like an Eighties design – perhaps an indicator of the rapid rate of development in the tech sphere. The corresponding ‘computer aided

cranes’ features look at the benefits of CAD design (which was still largely 2D back then), early software for construction planning and site safety (zoning), while Kerwin DW Chong, director of engineering at Hawaiian Crane and Rigging, Honolulu, examines ‘dimensionless analysis’ to aid crane

buyers in making purchasing decisions. The issue also includes a preview

for Bauma 1992 – which subsequently took place on 6-12 April. “Bauma is massive,” we proclaimed at the time. We reported, at time of writing, Bauma ‘92 had 1407 confirmed exhibitors; compare this to the 3,684 exhibitors Bauma is expecting later this year, the continued growth of the show is undeniably impressive. Back then we partly attributed the

buoyancy of Bauma ’92 exhibitor bookings to the strength of the German construction sector, writing, “Germany currently buys about one out of every two construction industry machines sold in Europe. Much of this demand is attributable to the unification of East and West Germanys.”

How sad, then, that 30 years later division threatens to undermine European unity.
