HEARTENING WORDS...
This month marks a first for Cranes Today as we cover the subject of women in the lifting industry. To be completely honest I was little bit apprehensive: after all what do I, a grey- haired, middle-aged man sitting behind a desk, know about the challenges that women face out in the lifting industry?! How would I best approach this? So I did the only thing I sensibly could: I asked six inspirational women leaders working in the UK lifting industry about their experiences... I needn't have been anxious: the positive response I received
from all the women who contributed to the feature was heartening... so thank you to all of you involved. The feature starts on page 34. One collective piece of advice to emerge from the article, for women starting out in the industry, was the importance of seeking out mentors and connecting with others in the industry. Hayley Sutch, Andrea Lowrie, Gill Riley and Sarah Spivey all recommend this. “Creating mentorship programmes, networking opportunities, and ensuring inclusive workplace cultures would make a huge difference in making the industry more welcoming for women,” say Hayley and Andrea.
