GDC awards Hudson River Tunnel contract US - The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) recently awarded the Hudson River Tunnel construction contract to Traylor/Walsh/Skanska JV. Package 1C: The Hudson River Tunnel

Section involves tunnelling under the Hudson River and includes the longest stretch of tunnel boring for the Hudson Tunnel Project. The two tunnel tubes, each approximately 2.2km-long, will connect the Hudson County Access Shaft in Weehawken, New Jersey, to the 12th Ave Access Shaft on the West Side of Manhattan. The tunnel will be excavated using

two TBMs designed for the conditions under the Hudson River, including rock, soft soil, and the block of stabilised earth created by the Hudson River Ground Stabilisation Project. In addition to tunnel boring, the

US$1.29 billion project includes the construction of nine cross-passages; stabilising the ground around a section of Hudson Bergen Light Rail tracks that the new tunnel will pass under; and constructing a permanent underground support system to strengthen a section of the Willow Avenue Bridge between Weehawken and Hoboken. With the award of this contract, six of

the 10 construction packages that make up the Hudson Tunnel Project are now in progress or completed. Together with Package 1A: The Palisades

Tunnel and Package 1B: The Manhattan Tunnel, which are under construction, “Faster commutes and thousands of

good paying jobs – that is the promise of the Gateway Tunnel and why we fought so hard to keep this project moving forward,” said New York Governor, Kathy Hochul. “Advancing this critical contract is yet another big step towards realising the immense opportunity of Gateway and delivering one of the nation’s most essential infrastructure projects.” The Palisades Tunnel Project, awarded

to Schiavone Dragados Lane JV in 2024, is the first tunnel boring project of the Hudson Tunnel Project. It includes boring two parallel tubes approximately 15.6km-long with an inside diameter of approximately 8m and six cross- passages, and building the Hudson County Access Shaft. The Manhattan Tunnel Project, awarded

to Frontier/Kemper/Tutor/Perini JV in early 2025, is building the section of new tunnel connecting to the Hudson Yards

Toulouse TBM breakthrough FRANCE - A TBM operated by an Eiffage Génie Civil and NGE-BTP consortium recently achieved its second breakthrough on the Toulouse Metro Line C project. TBM ‘Berthe de Puybusque’ made the

breakthrough at the future Ponts Jumeaux station, marking the end of its first drive. This first section of 2.54km – out of

the 4.66km of excavation planned – was marked by crossing the Fondeyre station before reaching the end of the drive at Ponts Jumeaux station. The TBM will be returned to its starting point, the La Vache Gare – Le Grand Marché station, from where it will undertake its second drive, boring towards the future Raisin station. Eiffage and NGE-BTP are responsible

for two lots on the Line C project. Lot 1 comprises the design and construction of a 3.85km-long tunnel, three stations and four ancillary structures, plus construction of three shafts; Lot 2 covers the design and construction of an 8.42km-long tunnel, six stations, five auxiliary structures at intersections, a connecting tunnel to the maintenance site, and nine shafts.

Stockholm Metro extension blasting completed SWEDEN - Blasting work was recently officially completed on Stockholm Metro’s expansion project. The client is Region Stockholm and the

first blast took place in April 2019. Tunnelling and other heavy construction works reached peak activity over 2021-2022 when more than 40 sections of the extension projects were active simultaneously. In total, approximately 21,500 blasts were carried out, culminating in the final operation at the connection point between Solna and Stockholm. The extension will add more than

20km of new tracks and 18 stations to Stockholm’s metro network

Frankfurt sees U5 progress at Güterplatz station GERMANY - The new Güterplatz underground station on Frankfurt’s U5 line is taking shape below Europa-Allee. The Porr Ingenieurbau team says it has

made significant progress connecting the Europaviertel (European Quarter) to the local public transport network.

Since February, the external walls of

the station have been largely completed so the building’s shell is almost fully enclosed. The upper edge of the station is visible from the outside. At the station’s ends, the internal walls for two technical facilities are being constructed. As the structural work progresses, the

reinforced concrete and steel struts are being removed from the excavation pit. The new U5 route is approximately

2.75km long and connects the Europaviertel, located on the site of a former main freight yard in Frankfurt, to the city’s metro network.

Yangtze rail bore finish CHINA - A CREG slurry TBM recently completed the 11.18km-long drive on the underwater section of the Chongtai Yangtze River Tunnel, which is part of a high-speed rail project. The 15.4m-diameter TBM ‘Linghang’ was

launched from Chongming Island, Shanghai. CREG says the shield included adaptive

chamber pressure control, predictive data-driven decision-making, automatic attitude control, and self-adjusting muck circulation, enabling a new tunnelling mode of autonomous excavation with staff on duty. Trains are to travel at up to 350km/hr through the high-speed rail tunnel, said CREG.

Contract signing on Naples metro Line 10 package ITALY - A Webuild-led consortium has signed the design and build contract for Naples Metro’s new Line 10. The €660m contract, which was

awarded in December last year, was signed in March. It covers the first 6.5km and seven stations of Phase 1A of Lot 1 of the metro project. The consortium also includes Eteria Consorzio Stabile (in which Itinera is a shareholder), Costruire, ICM and MN Metropolitana di Napoli. Line 10 is being built to improve rail

transport in north-east Naples through a 14km route with 12 stations, enabling travel between the city centre and the Naples- Afragola station in about 20 minutes. The line will serve more than 650,000 residents in a densely populated area. Construction will be carried out in

phases. The contract signed in March also grants the consortium the exclusive right to execute further works – currently awaiting funding – for the future extension of the line toward the city centre and the Naples-Afragola station.
