65 YEARS INDUSTRY EXP.
STRABAG UK’s Woodsmith Mine development is set to break a world record. A 36.7 km conveyor tunnel driven by Tunnel Boring Machines through North Yorkshire. At that scale, real-time air monitoring is as critical an engineering challenge as the tunnel itself.
Trolex AIR X real-time particulate monitors, SENTRO 8 and SENTRO 1 Gas Detectors were among the 236 devices fitted across multiple integrated systems, contributing to a total of 824 individual sensors monitoring the project.
Particulate matter from PM2.5 to PM10 is constantly tracked, while logic systems monitor for critical gases including CH₄, CO, NO, H₂S, SO₂, O₂ and DPM.

Local audio/visual alarms, flow sensors and Intrinsically Safe Battery Back-Up units support the system. The network has already flagged Diesel Particulate Matter and hydrocarbon pockets in real time — enabling the boring machine to be lowered immediately to eliminate explosion risk.
Like industry leaders worldwide, STRABAG’s decision to deploy Trolex sends a clear message to their workforce: your safety is the priority. It’s a standard Trolex has helped uphold for 65 years in the world’s most demanding underground environments.
