CAST A SPOTLIGHT
Covering the underground space sector offers a wealth of possibilities, most of them technical but not all to be detailed engineering, for these endeavours fit within the greater world of budgets, people and time. The former offers firmer ground compared to the latter which often can be nebulous, relatively. You can’t kick its tyres or hammer its rock, for it’ll just…give way, and remould itself. Like a cloud. So when infrastructure projects
of any kind are discussed, anywhere, with regard to how they’ve been going and what they may do differently, the matters concerned may seem to be less tangible, but giving attention is worthwhile for they influence the context within which engineers get to work. As such, we look at the most recent updates that have come out from government on HS2 and also from the National Audit Office (NAO) - which has, separately, also offered views on Sizewell C. Then we get back to firmer
ground, with articles on some US trenchless works, and a trio
of ITA guides that heartily dive deep into equipment specification for TBM systems and calculating thrust forces of open mode shield drives in weak rock, respectively. That’s two; the third guide looks at segmental lining of bored tunnels, though does so by casting its eye beyond the construction phase to consider the challenges and defects that can arise, for an owner, during the much long operational life of a tunnel. Beyond the construction period
is also touched upon elsewhere in this issue, considering: the fire safety needs of transport tunnels; and, changes in thinking around long-term resilience of immersed tube tunnels, drawing upon decades of experience of operational assets. We also begin with a feature about immersed tube tunnels - the Weser Crossing, in Germany - but this project is in the midst of construction. We are pleased to also include
the latest updates from the Chairs of the BTS and BTSYM.
