DATA - NORTH AMERICA PROJECT PIPELINE

Spotlight on the most recent figures from GlobalData on the tunnel-related project pipelines for transport and utility infrastructure spend in North America, where the latter leads unlike in other regions of the world

INTRODUCTION The global tunnel construction projects pipeline recently stood at nearly US$1.2 trillion, comprising projects at all stages of development from announcement to execution, for infrastructure projects that are tunnels only or have a significant portion of tunnels involved, according to the latest analysis from GlobalData. Of that total, North America holds fourth place ranking

in the global construction pipeline by value (US$123.3 billion) says GlobalData’s most recent report - ‘Project Insight - Global Tunnel Construction Projects, Q1 2026’. Australasia is marginally ahead (U$130.2 billion), in

third place, but they each have less than half of either of the two leading regions in the field - Western Europe (US$348.7 billion), ranked in first place, and North-east Asia (US$292.8 billion). By stage though, North America is effectively joint leader

with (though just behind) Australasia when considering the first stage of the project pipeline - Pre-Planning (announcement and study), when also measured by value. However, its own largest pipeline value by stage is

Execution ((Construction stage, at almost US$47.4 billion), although that leaves it sitting in mid-ranking level in global

terms, and similarly for Pre-Execution (US$29.4 billion - covering design, tender and award). For the Planning (US$3.3 billion), its ranking is low. A new category of information has been added to the

quarterly analysis - that of breakdown of the pipeline by type of project, or whether they are new, upgrade, redevelopment, renovation or expansion. Every region is dramatically dominated by new projects, as may
