FUTURE WORKS
New projects and older tunnels both call for work. Underground infrastructure,
large and small, needs to be built as societies grow in the more established industrial nations but also in the rapidly spreading cities of expanding economies; industrial nations with many existing tunnels also need them - increasingly - to be repaired or improved in a variety of aspects, and not all of them structural. For example, adopting enhanced
lighting regimes for metro tunnels, taking advantage of the latest advances in energy efficient illumination that is also more environmentally-friendly, from a lower carbon perspective. That’s what you see, of course.
What you don’t see are the systems behind it all, and how they can be rethought, including with an eye to how the metros are operated and maintained these days, and the access needed, also handling emergencies. Much can be done differently with assets in North America, as is argued in one of the features in this issue, but it is as valid a point for elsewhere.
Also in North America, we learn
of the past, present and future of metro development in Los Angeles, as was presented to a BTS meeting previously. The city’s geology presents combinations of challenges, which also led to interesting developments with segment gaskets. Staying with California, we
preview the North American Tunneling conference (NAT 2026), taking place mid-June. The programme also discusses tunnels old and new, large and small. The No-Dig Show recently covered much in trenchless and we have a paper on microtunneling in Calgary. Keeping international, we
spotlight projects with hard rock and ground support, and new rig and equipment for drill & blast. Also in this issue is a guideline on how BIM can help asset life cycle performance, which is a further dimension to all tunnels in future. New, old, and variety - quite apart
from geological surprises - those are all parts of the underground.
