ICSMGE 2026 | PREVIEW

VIENNA FOR ICSMGE 2026

Soil mechanics, geology, deep foundations and tunnels will be key points of focus and discussion at a major industry gathering in Vienna, mid-June - the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE) 2026, when the Terzaghi Archive is also to be officially open to visit.

A packed week of information gathering and many opportunities to meet experts and talk business is afforded ground engineering specialists, geologists and tunnellers by the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE) 2026, which takes place in Vienna over 14-19 June. In addition, there will be the official opening of the

archive of Karl Terzaghi - a pioneer in soil mechanics and who is regarded, in effect, as the first geotechnical engineer. With 100 years passed since he published his book, the city is marking the anniversary by hosting IGSNGE and also there is opportunity to visit the Terzaghi Archive following the main conference sessions. In the conference itself, mornings will mostly

be devoted to Plenary Sessions and Workshops, respectively. Afternoons are given over to the Technical

Programme, which will run with eight parallel tracks over three days (15-17 June), and then finish with a short early session on 18 June. Further Plenary Sessions then follow in the afternoon, then the Closing Ceremony.

After so much, the activities are followed on 19 June

with opportunities for Technical Visits. These elements are discussed further below. ICSMGE 2026 is organised by the Austrian

Geotechnical Society and the Austrian Society for Geomechanics (OGG). In a busy year for the industry in Austria, OGG will

separately hold, over 7-9 October in Salzburg, its 75th Geomechanics Colloquium and 15th Austrian Tunnel Day.

PLENARY SESSIONS AND LECTURES Many lectures are planned. One of the invited lectures is to give some

consideration to the under-utilisation of the Observational Method. The speaker is to be Tony O’Brien, a winner of the Skempton Medal from the British Geotechnical Association (BGA). The case is to be put for the Observational method to support digital twins, adaptive design, and use of databases. Among the many other talks planned are: roles of

geotechnical contractors in influencing sustainability; and, the history and expansion of Vienna metro.
