EDUCATION IS ALL
Coming first from practical experience or academic pathways, and then moving more into the real world cases and gathering lessons all are basically immersions in education. Education never goes away.
Although, sometimes particular opportunities do end, or lapse. Or pause. Like the MSc course in tunnelling.
Held in Warwick University as a collaboration with the BTS and industry, the engaging course delivered high-level outcomes for those who attended, arriving at different stages in their careers, and also for employers, and thus industry and economy. The MSc was leverage that benefited those individuals as well as society. Covid curtailed the offering to
tunnellers and employers. But now the push is on in earnest to restart the MSc with efforts to do so arising not least from recognition of its many benefits gained by past attendees, who have since grown further into industry leadership positions. In this issue of T&TI, the call for a restart is issued by the BTS Chair, John Corcoran.
Education only goes so far, though,
if it is primarily academic. The application of learned principles to the needs, opportunities and challenges presented by the world is where education is enhanced and expands, and becomes a virtuous loop, encompassing all. Practical lessons must be fed back. Teaching by industry experts was a strategically important feature of the MSc. Sharing lessons also happens in
many other ways and venues, such as regular BTS and BTSYM meetings and also, upcoming, this next 1-week Design & Construction course, in July (also at Warwick). Industry conferences are also key, such as the World Tunnel Congress, in Canada, in May. Reading case studies also brings insight, and we share reports from planned major tunnels in Munich and London, respectively. Reflections from a career well
enjoyed in tunnelling are shared in a profile interview with David Fawcett, a former BTS Chair, consultancy leader and who continues to work internationally.
