RGM CRANES PARTNERS WITH SANDVIK MINING G

lobal engineering group Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology has received its first batch of 30t capacity

cranes from RGM Cranes, for its new premises in South Africa. Sandvik Mining RSA has ordered a

total of 19 overhead single and double girder cranes, ranging from 3t to 30t in capacity, at its facilities in Kempton Park. The company recently moved its South African headquarters to Kempton Park near Johannesburg as part of strategic plans to consolidate its resources and further enhance its customer service. Simon Andrews, MD, Sandvik South

Africa, said the Khomanani facility includes three large workshop areas and office space on a 62,000 square metre site. “As the Tsonga name Khomanani

reflects – “hold each other together as a unit” – our new home unites us under one roof to collaborate, adapt and learn as we strive towards higher standards,” said Andrews. “The technical synergies of the workshops add to our commitment and capacity for local production that meets global quality requirements.” Two of the workshops are dedicated

to refurbishment and rebuilding of local equipment for the southern African region – mainly Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. This is where new standard- format equipment is configured for local use – typically including features like safety systems, lighting, toe-hitches and decals to customer specifications. “Our remanufacturing facility allows us

to completely rebuild machines to OEM standards, including the sub-assembly refurbishments on transmissions, axles, differential and pump motors,” added Andrews.

The first workshop has 23 bays for machines to be refurbished, while the second is specially equipped with 100t capacity flooring for the heavier tracked equipment such as underground continuous miners and surface drill rigs. The fit-for-purpose layout of the spacious site allows the heavy transport vehicles to loop in and out with equipment without needing to manoeuvre. improving workflow and better efficiency. A combination of cranes from 3t to 30t capacity – as well as a specialised 50t forklift – facilitate safe and quick off- loading and reloading. The third workshop focuses on local assembly of equipment for both South African as well as global markets to Sandvik’s high OEM standards. Anthony Breedt, technical department

project coordinator, Sandvik Mining RSA added, in addition to RGM Crane’s track record, other factors it took into consideration were customer service, the ability to quickly and efficiently formulate bespoke solutions, and the ready availability of spare parts and other components. “RGM Cranes’ overhead single and double girder cranes are highly affordable, making the cost-to- performance ratio extremely favourable,” said Shaun Field, sales engineer, RGM Cranes.

Field added the selected RGM

Cranes overhead cranes incorporate Guralp equipment that includes a hoist monitoring system, electromagnetic brakes, predictive maintenance application, programmable control unit, variable speed drive control on cross and long travel motions, as well as load limits in a sheave bracket to assist with uncalibrated loads. The hoist monitoring system quickly identifies and provides feedback on any crane faults; operator faults and mishandling; overloads; excessive use; the amount of lifts completed in one shift and the number of hours a crane is in operation on a daily basis. RGM Cranes worked closely with the Sandvik team to develop a floor plan and workshop layout that would optimise the functionality of each of the cranes. “The cranes are being used for various

operations within a number of sections that include maintenance, production, processing, wash bay, components department and the manufacturing department. It was important to offer a combination of crane configurations that would maximise crane usage for the different area applications and equipment to be lifted,” said Field. Breedt says the project was expedited in a seamless manner, with RGM Cranes installing and commissioning all cranes ahead of the original schedule. ●
