Driving hoist forward COMMENT

August 2025 Issue 264 T

he hoist and lifting industry continues to evolve, driven by advances in technology, a heightened focus on safety regulations and an ever-increasing commitment to sustainability. As we navigate the growing demands placed on this dynamic sector, this month’s edition of Hoist explores the key challenges and innovations shaping its future. In our ongoing CEO diaries, we hear from Simon Luke, group managing director of Reid Lifting, as he discusses his role as a leader and experience in the industry, and the crucial role the sector plays across construction, manufacturing, shipping and logistics on page 38. Also in this issue, we take a look at the current state of the nuclear industry as it marks a steady growth

across the globe as demands for energy security and decarbonisation push the nuclear energy sector into the spotlight. On page 14, we speak to experts in the industry and examine hoist’s role in the sector. Automation is steadily becoming common place in hoist, despite the importance of equipment such as manual chain hoist. However, with the steady rise of technological development, can safety regulations keep up? On page 22, Julian Champlin investigates the need for review, as with electric chain hoists being the prime choice for automation, what safety regulations are in place? Lastly, in this edition’s Project of the month, Chesterfield Crane Company celebrates its installation of nine cranes across the UK for William Hare Group, demonstrating its expertise in the industry on page 8. We hope you enjoy this edition of Hoist as we continue to celebrate the innovations – and the individuals – driving the lifting industry forward.
