PD PORTS PARTNERS WITH KONECRANES TO CONVERT 4 RTGS TO ELECTRIC CRANES

P

D Ports, owner and operator of Teesport, the fifth largest port in the UK, has contracted Konecranes to convert the

primary power supply of four diesel- driven Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes (RTGs) to electric cranes. The £1.2million conversion project will

mean 70% of PD Ports’ RTG fleet runs on electric and forms the latest step in an ongoing journey of decarbonization for the port operator, which aims to reach carbon-neutrality across its Teesport-based operations by 2027. The project involves

the removal of all diesel components. This will completely eliminate the consumption of diesel fuel instead allowing the equipment to run wholly on electric – significantly reducing carbon emissions

and noise pollution as well as lowering maintenance requirements. “As long-standing partners of

Konecranes, we are very much looking forward to working with them on this project and delivering on our commitment to developing clean, sustainable port technology,” said Frans Calje, CEO, PD Ports.

“The implementation of alternative,

cleaner energy supplies is one of the key components to our longterm vision for Teesport and is another step in achieving our 30-year plan, in which we aim to work with customers and stakeholders to elevate the River Tees to the UK’s most successful port region by 2050.” Each RTG will take an average of three weeks to covert meaning the project, which will extend the lifespan of the equipment for an additional decade, is due for completion in early 2022. During the retrofit,

Konecranes will be installing fibre optics to future- proof the RTGs, enabling continuous upgrades and access to features such as remote operations, meaning the equipment will both increase efficiencies and productivity. ●

KONECRANES DELIVERS 3 RMG CRANES TO THE PORT OF VIRGINIA, USA

Terminals (NIT) facility. The order follows on from the successful

K

deployment of four Konecranes RMGs of a similar design at the Virginia International Gateway (VIG). The order was booked in November 2021, and the cranes will be delivered by the end of 2023. The Port of Virginia is a longstanding Konecranes customer, with a fleet of 116 Konecranes automated RMG (ARMG) cranes working at its Norfolk International (NIT) and Virginia International (VIG) container terminals. The new cranes will work in a similar way to the current Konecranes RMGs, loading and unloading trains and

onecranes has delivered three more Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes to the Port of Virginia US, for its Norfolk International

terminal trucks to serve the port’s customers in the Midwest and Ohio Valley. The Konecranes RMGs will be remotely operated from a control center, so they will not have cabins. They will lift containers 1-over-2 high, handling double-stacked trains, with a lifting height of 12.2m (40’), a span of 23.5m (77’), and an outreach of 13m (42’ 8’’).

“The Port of Virginia has grown and flourished with Konecranes’ container handling technology. We are always finding new ways to improve our container handling operations, using everything at our disposal including the possibilities that Konecranes technology gives us,” said Rich Ceci, senior VP, Technology & Projects, VIG. In January 2018,

construction began on a $452m terminal optimization project at NIT that increased the terminal’s capacity by 46% within the same footprint. NIT has direct, on-dock rail access to Norfolk Southern’s Heartland Corridor, allowing second-day double-stack service to inland markets. NIT also gives access to CSX Intermodal. Expanded rail services are critical to the port’s customers in the Midwest and Ohio Valley. ●
