KONECRANES INSTALLS ITS FIRST NEXT GENERATION S-SERIES CRANE IN THE UK

K

onecranes has partnered with ABB to supply a material handling system, incorporating an S-series crane, to the

company’s Drives Service Workshop (DSW) in Coalville, Leicestershire. Its first installation of the next generation S-series model in the UK. ABB was originally looking for a

lightweight crane system, but due to an increasing number of large and heavy drives it needed to service, the material handling system of the S-series crane was more suitable in terms of being safe, ergonomic and its efficient movement within the workshop. The DSW provides reconditioning,

preventative maintenance, service, repairs, spare parts and cleaning for low voltage variable speed drives and drive modules, which cannot be undertaken in the field.

The compact nature of the crane also

met ABB’s requirement for heavy-duty lifting, which did not take up too much room in the workshop. Neil Rayns, engineer, DSW, ABB, said

several lifting equipment providers were invited to tender for the project: “There were a number of options on the table, but the Konecranes’ proposal was the most appropriate for our requirements, representing the best engineered technology and value for money. Konecranes’ reputation for product

quality, reliability and after sales support also gave us the confidence that we were making the correct decision.” The S-series crane which was installed comprises a 16.1m span overhead single girder gantry and a 3.29t SWL S-series electric rope hoist. The crane has cross and long travel speeds of up to 20m/min and a hoisting speed of up to 3.1m/min, with a 4.29m height of lift. The crane is operated via a radio remote controller. The crane uses synthetic rope, which

requires no lubrication, eliminating the possibility of delicate electronic components within the drive units being contaminated with oil and has a smooth movement and accurate load positioning. Other features include a tilted drum

and off-set reeving, which also ensure smooth and accurate load handling, whilst eliminating peak rope forces to reduce the wear on reeving components. The remote radio control allows the operator to use the crane from anywhere within the workshop for increased safety and operational freedom. ABB provides electrification, robotics,

automation and motion technology, with an emphasis on energy saving and sustainability. Its UK operation employs 1,800 people, operating from 15 locations and supplies £0.5bn of technology, products and services to a broad range of market sectors. ●
