OPERATION THE START OF electricity production, as well as commercial operation at Finland’s Olkiluoto 3 EPR will both be delayed by one month due to extra turbine overhaul and inspection work, plant operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj said.

THE JAPAN ATOMIC Energy Agency has resumed operation the 30MW High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor for the first time in a decade.

EQUIPMENT DOOSAN HEAVY INDUSTRIES & Construction has signed a contract with China Techenergy Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China General Nuclear, to supply Industrial Anti-seismic Protection Systems that will be installed at Tianwan 7&8.

KHNP IN COLLABORATION with Iljin Electric, has won a competitive tender to supply transformers worth €7m for Romania’s Cernavoda nuclear plant. KHNP will oversee project management, and Iljin Electric will be responsible for equipment design and production.

THE VOLGODONSK BRANCH of Russia’s AEM-technology has manufactured a set of elbows for the main circulation pipeline for China’s Tianwan 7&8 and Xudabao 3&4.

SAFETY

RUSSIAN UTILITY ROSENERGOATOM has confirmed the safety of the new units at Leningrad II following the first ever comprehensive safety inspection of VVER-1200 power units. For 10 days, Rosenergoatom inspectors studied plant activities and interviewed/monitored personnel.

AN IAEA SAFETY Aspects of Long Term Operation (Salto) team has completed a review of long-term operational safety at the Ascó nuclear plant in Spain. The review was requested by the plant operator.

THE US NRC has launched a special inspection at Davis-Besse that will focus on two separate issues: multiple diesel generator failures during testing and maintenance; and a complicated reactor trip in July.

THE IAEA HAS said that Japanese laboratories monitoring radionuclides in seawater, marine sediment and fish near the Fukushima Daiichi NPP produce reliable data, demonstrating a continued high level of accuracy and competence.

and care for the environment,” said Pyotr Kotin, acting president of Energoatom. Completion of unit 4 at the Khmelnitsky

nuclear power plant has been identified as a pilot project, and in future four more AP1000 units are planned. The total cost of the project will be up to $30 billion. As part of the visit, Kotin met with the

During the visit of a high-level Ukrainian delegation to the USA, Westinghouse Electric Company signed an exclusive agreement with Ukrainian nuclear utility Energoatom to bring Westinghouse AP1000 reactors to multiple sites in Ukraine. The signing, at the Department of Energy (DOE) Headquarters in Washington, was witnessed by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko. During the visit, Galushchenko and US Energy

Secretary Granholm signed a joint statement to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and climate. “In the long run application of US AP1000

technology — a proven Gen III+ reactor design of around 1100MW with passive safety systems and unique features such as standardisation which will reduce construction time and cost — will allow Energoatom to ensure the highest level of safety, reliable nuclear generation, innovation,

China First criticality for HTR-PM Unit 1 of the two high-temperature gas-cooled reactors at China’s demonstration HTR-PM plant at Shidaowan, Shandong province, has achieved criticality on 12 September, 23 days after the start of fuel loading. The unit is scheduled to be connected to the electricity grid before the end of the year. Fuel loading started the day after an

operating licence was issued by the National Nuclear Safety Administration. The initial fuel loading was divided into two

stages, China Huaneng noted. The fuel elements were first loaded into a temporary fuel storage tank, and then transferred to the core through the fuel loading and unloading system. Over

founder and president of Holtec International Kris Singh. Discussions concerned implementation of joint projects, in particular the commissioning of the Centralised Spent Fuel Storage Facility in Ukraine, as well as prospects for future cooperation. Kotin also met DOE representatives and

discussed strategic activities, key investment projects and promising areas of bilateral cooperation, including construction of new nuclear power units and production of commercial hydrogen. Energoatom also signed a Memorandum of

Understanding with NuScale Power to explore the deployment of NuScale power plants in Ukraine. Under the MOU, NuScale will support Energoatom’s examination of NuScale’s small modular reactor technology, including a feasibility study for proposed project sites, the development of a project timeline and deliverables, cost studies, technical reviews, licensing and permitting activities, and project specific engineering studies and design work. NuScale’s SMR design features a fully factory fabricated NuScale Power Module™ capable of generating 77MWe with scalable power plants able to house up to four, six, or 12 modules. The agreement is “further evidence of

growing international interest for NuScale’s small modular reactors and indicative of Ukraine’s desire to find new, innovative sources of clean, reliable, and affordable energy to the country,” a NuScale statement said. ■

a period of some 30 days some 104,000 fuel elements were installed. A full load for a single reactor requires around 420,000 fuel elements. The HTR-PM plant uses a fully ceramic coated

particle spherical fuel element, indigenously developed. Each sphere contains 7g of uranium enriched to 8.5% with graphite as the matrix material. The core height is 11m and it has a diameter of 3m. There are two independent reactivity control systems: the primary one comprising 24 control rods in the side graphite reflector, and the secondary one of six channels for small absorber spheres falling by gravity, also in the side reflector. Fuel elements are released into the top of the core one by one with the reactor operating. Some graphite moderator U
