to the community for economic development, and that land houses 20 private businesses, with more announcing plans to locate there. More than 3000 acres at the site are set aside for conservation, and ETTP has a history centre and a component of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
Turkey Rapid progress at Akkuyu The second tier of the internal containment shell (ICS) has been installed at unit 2 of Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear power plant. The unit is one of four VVER-1200 reactors being built by Russia’s Rosatom under a build- own-operate model. The ICS is one of the main safety features,
providing protection for the reactor compartment. It is also a support for pipeline penetrations and a polar crane. The ICS tier took 12 hours to assemble using a Liebherr LR 13000 heavy crawler crane. After installation of the second tier, the height of the reactor building increased by 12m to a height of 16.95m. Next, the builders must weld the first and second tiers together and reinforce and concrete the shell. The inner containment sections were
manufactured at a plant in Russia’s Leningrad region. Separate sections (24 in total, 6-7t each) were delivered by sea from St Petersburg to the Akkuyu construction site where they were assembled into a single tier. Earlier in September Atommash, the

Volgodonsk branch of AEM-Technologies began a long-cycle operation to manufacture the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel for Akkuyu 3. Atommash has also started shipping four 355t steam generators for Akkuyu 2. Also in September, Russia’s Izhorskiye Zavody
said it had completed hydraulic tests on the RPV for Akkuyu 2. The equipment is manufactured under a contract with AEM-Technologies. Izhora specialists are now preparing for the control assembly of the vessel with internals and the upper block cover — the final stage in the process of manufacturing the RPV before shipment to the customer. Training of specialists for Akkuyu NPP is also
progressing. In September, Akkuyu Nuklear, said the latest group of 24 Turkish students had been selected to study at the Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) as part of the training programme for operators.

Slovakia Slovakia to end import and processing of used fuel The Slovak government has approved a total ban on the import of radioactive waste and used nuclear fuel from abroad based on a parliamentary amendment to the Environment Act of 1992. The aim of bill is to reduce any threat to the environment and prevent the emergence of health risks. The ban should take effect in January 2022 after which only radioactive waste and used nuclear fuel produced in Slovakia will be exempted. It “explicitly prohibits activities related to radioactive waste and used nuclear fuel which does not originate in Slovakia” and sees such activities “in the context of pollution and environmental damage”. A resolution to accept the motion was passed
by a majority and will be sent by Prime Minister Eduard Heger to President Zuzana Čaputová. While it is effective retrospectively from 1 September, it does not affect contracts made before that date. Slovak decommissioning specialist Jadrová a
vyraďovacia spoločnosť (JAVYS) has expressed concern that this could lead to job losses. The company currently has four contracts with Sogin of Italy to process a total of 865t of low-level radioactive material from the shutdown Caorso NPP. The work and return of the materials are scheduled to be complete by 2023.
Poland
Ciech and Synthos Green to cooperate on nuclear Polish chemical company Ciech has signed a Letter of Intent to cooperate with Synthos Green Energy (ESG) to cooperate in the use of small modular reactor (SMR) and micro modular reactor (MMR) technologies. As part of the cooperation, both entities will define, the possibility of building small or micro nuclear reactors on the premises of Ciech’s production plants and they will analyse possible models of energy supply under mutual agreements. The Ciech Group announced the possibility of using nuclear power during the publication of the ESG strategy in May 2021. It assumes a departure from the use of coal in 2033, and the achievement of climate neutrality in 2040. The LoI will enable the Ciech Group to
thoroughly analyse the use of SMRs and MMRs in plants producing soda ash. The Group is one of the largest recipients of coal after the commercial power industry in Poland, but in accordance with its strategy, it is to gradually move away from this raw material in favour of obtaining energy from natural gas, thermal waste processing or just nuclear energy. ■
