China approves 10 new nuclear units


China’s State Council at a meeting presided over by Premier Li Qiang, approved construction of 10 new units at five nuclear power projects – Fangchenggang Phase III, Haiyang Phase III, Sanmen Phase III, Taishan Phase II and Xiapu Phase I. These include eight Hualong One reactors and two CAP1000 reactors. China General Nuclear (CGN) confirmed it had


received approval for units 3&4 at its Taishan NPP in Guangdong province with 1,200 MWe Hualong One (HPR1000) pressurised water reactors. Also approved were units 5&6 at its Fangchenggang NPP in the Guangxi Autonomous Region with 1,208 MWe Hualong One reactors. CGN said that it was undertaking preparatory work for the new units, construction of which will begin when the Permit for Nuclear Power Station Construction has been obtained from the National Nuclear Safety Administration. United Kingdom Sizewell C gets government funding The UK government has announced a £14.2bn (US$19.2 bn) investment in the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant. Funding for the two-unit plant, located on the Suffolk coast of southern Britain came as part of the government Spending Review. The Sizewell C consortium, a group of over 200 nuclear supply-chain companies and organisations backing the plant has already signed £330m ($446m) in contracts with local companies. Some 70% of the contracts associated with the project are predicted to go to UK suppliers. Sizewell is one of eight sites identified for

CNEA said that, by 2024, China had achieved 100% domestic origin for key main equipment for nuclear power and ensured the independent control of key component technologies. It added that the country’s independent research and development in the sector continues to achieve new breakthroughs. ■

EQUIPMENT RUSSIAN COMPANY ZEO Energotok has shipped 50 pieces of equipment for units 1&2 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Türkiye, These include DN 200 valves and DN 500 sealed valves. ZEO Energotok is implementing an import substitution project for the production of sealed valves used in NPPs.

THE CZECH MINISTRY of Industry & Trade (MIT) responded to controversy provoked by a letter from the European Commission (EC) asking that signing the contract with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power for construction of new units at the Dukovany NPP should be postponed. MIT said the letter, sent to Industry Minister  Stéphane Séjourné, was not legally binding.

US PRESIDENT DONALD Trump’s fiscal   priorities for the coming year aims to cut  federal spending. This includes cuts of $4.7bn from the Department of Energy’s federal funding. The Office of Nuclear Energy would see a $408m (24%) cut, with remaining funding focused on reactor development, advanced nuclear fuels and support for the Idaho National Laboratory.


THE US STATE governors of Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen regional collaboration on energy policy, infrastructure development, and nuclear energy innovation. It establishes a cooperative framework to  three states. It focuses on advancing energy resilience, coordinating infrastructure, advocating for commonsense federal policies, and accelerating the development of reliable, affordable nuclear energy.
