ANENTA: WASTE DISPOSAL AT ITS BEST

ounded in 2014 following the reform of the NHS and the implementation of the Health and Social Care Act, the founders and
directors of Anenta set up the business to address significant failings in the delivery of waste management solutions to the sector, which were costing the NHS and related businesses, including the pharmacy sector, millions of pounds each year.
The brainchild of Anenta’s founder and now Managing Director, Graham Flynn, the business has been at the forefront of improving healthcare waste management since, with a keen focus on returning savings to the sector and improving efficiencies.
A highly-experienced environmental services professional and entrepreneur, Graham has worked at every level of the waste management industry, including six years within the NHS focusing on the stabilisation of waste management practices and contracts across London. So he certainly knows what he’s talking about.
‘Our management team’s experience within the public sector, particularly in the NHS, helped us understand the unique challenges created by changing governmental strategies and priorities,’ says Graham. ‘Knowing the financial constraints and stringent procurement rules that the NHS has to operate under, gave us the ability to assist the public sector in delivering to its targets.’
Working together, Anenta’s senior team quickly identified that the only way to enable the healthcare sector to hit its targets - and to make savings within the strict parameters that it must operate - was to deploy an online healthcare waste management system that enables the tracking of queries against contract specifications through the analysis of data. As a result, they invested over £1m, as well as a great deal of time
and effort, to create an agile tech solution to the address the challenge – Vector.
Deploying Vector’s analytics and smart technology, Anenta identifies waste service efficiencies and savings for pharmacies, ensuring that their NHS authority only pays for services used, delivering effective contract management against existing specifications.
Anenta also ensures that services are correctly specified under future contracts, providing customers with transparency and the ability to proactively manage their environmental services. Aligned with this approach, Anenta identifies opportunities for adjustments to waste services that have the potential to bring about further savings through price negotiations with service providers.
Anenta also helps pharmacies with complex issues such as navigating ‘pre-acceptance’ audits required by the Environment Agency, streamlining the process and, in so doing, collectively saving pharmacies thousands of hours per year. It also identifies if pharmacies are disposing of retail stock and sharps containers from enhanced services or patient returns correctly, providing corrective advice and guidance where relevant, which has alone saved NHS England £1.2 million over 18 months.

By successfully stabilising pricing schedules and constantly optimising service provision so that capacity is used more effectively, our technology is able to return significant savings to the sector,’ says Graham.

Recently, the company has been championing the vaccination of clinical waste collection drivers as a priority, to help ensure that the collection of healthcare and vaccination waste is not affected by illness among those drivers. Anenta has also been involved in developing a new COVID-19 app, which gives pharmacies the ability to conduct compulsory clinical waste pre-acceptance and duty of care audits without the need for third- party on-site visits.
The app, which can be operated from a desktop as well as a range of mobile devices, takes the user through the audit process, covering duty of care and waste pre-acceptance in one go.
The app enables details of all internal waste containers to be recorded, including their location and content, and whether these are correctly labelled. Images are uploaded as a point of reference using mobile devices, enabling multiple site assessments to be undertaken; colleagues can then be emailed with a link to the section of the waste management audit that they need to complete.
Graham Flynn believes that every pharmacy can benefit from the advantages offered by the Anenta app.
‘Pharmacies have a duty of care to their staff within the Environmental Protection Act 1990,’ he says. ‘Those that fail to demonstrate proper measures face potential enforcement action by the Care Quality Commission. Our app enables pharmacies to fulfil their duties faster and more cost-effectively than has previously been possible. We view this as a win-win solution for all concerned!’
