UCA-NI PHARMACY ASSISTANT TRAINING
UCA-NI’s Level 2 Pharmacy Assistant training course 2021 commenced in February 2021. Delivered by training partner Global Horizon Skills, we have 27 assistants upskilling through fortnightly zooms and assessments. The benefit of the UCA-NI course is that all the training and support is delivered via fortnightly zoom sessions, with one to two hours’ commitment required weekly.
Feedback has been excellent – trainee Clare McKenna of Lockview Pharmacy said the programme is, ‘Absolutely brilliant. I have never felt so supported in any learning I’ve done before. With two small children, I simply couldn’t have gone to a night class'.
We anticipate enrolling a new cohort after Easter. In the meantime, if you would like to express an interest, just email
natalie@uca.org.uk with your pharmacy assistant’s name.

Community pharmacies across the Southern, South-Eastern and Western areas have been awarded a grant to upgrade pharmacy security. This can be claimed in this financial year but claims can also be made post 1 April 2021. This is very welcome as a similar award was made to pharmacies in Belfast and the Northern area in early 2020, so this completes the funding allocation across Northern Ireland. UCA- NI recently forwarded a Business Bulletin to pharmacies covering security companies and products.
FACEBOOK UPDATE
UCA-NI has a new Facebook page -
https://www.facebook.com/
Pharmacy.UCA.NI. Please click on our page and follow us. The UCA page regularly posts public health messages, health campaign information which you can share to your own pages. Likewise, we will like and share your health and wellbeing posts to boost coverage across Northern Ireland.
UCA also uses Facebook to promote community pharmacy as a profession and posts job vacancies for pharmacists and staff. For more information on our social media and how you can interact with us, speak to Natalie Mulholland on 028 9065 6576.
UPDATE: FOUNDATION PLACEMENT VISA
As you consider what you need to do in preparation for your incoming Foundation (Pre-reg) pharmacist, there is good news for those who are engaging ‘overseas’ students. Government has announced the introduction of a new Graduate Visa Scheme from the summer of 2021. This new visa will cover up to two years post-graduate study for any student switching from a Tier 4 education visa, which will be sufficient for the Foundation Period. The significant change is that employers will not require a Sponsorship Licence. As soon as detailed guidance is issued by the Home Office, we will bring you up to date.
BUSINESS SUPPORT Look out for the regular UCA-NI Business Bulletin e-zines containing signposting information for companies offering a range of products and services of interest to community pharmacy. UCA-NI currently has a number of preferred partners:
NEW: Partnership with X12Purifog Businesses will continue to require effective hygiene control measures as we move out of lockdown. The machine comes trolley-mounted for ease of deployment but can also be wall- mounted. For every machine sold, UCA will receive a rebate to continue our work in support of community pharmacy.
Telephone and communications solution Causeway Telecom can offer pharmacies a simple, cost-effective telecoms solution. UCA-NI has been working with Causeway Telecom for six years, during which time we have found the personal service provided by Causeway Telecom to be excellent and their prices very cost- effective. Causeway Telecom will quickly assess your bills and tell you if they can reduce your costs. Switching providers is straightforward and quick too.
