How to expand independent prescribing services?

Creating the Conditions for Safe Prescribing

New Support for Independent Prescribers Clinical Excellence in Prescribing Practice - The Fundamentals

The NPA is proud to launch a bespoke programme to support pharmacist independent prescribers. Clinical Excellence in Prescribing Practice will provide the essential knowledge, skills, support, and professional confidence to deliver safe, high-quality prescribing services. The course is suitable for all PIPs and those who oversee prescribing activity. In a clear, online modular format, it covers topics such as:

• Prescribing Competency • The Consultation • Prescribing Governance • Risk Assessment • Advertising • Review

Prescribers will also gain exclusive access to our Communities of Practice which enables them to connect with peers throughout their learning journey and continue building valuable professional relationships beyond the programme.

The NPA, in partnership with Q and Thiscovery, has developed a framework “Creating the Conditions for Safe Prescribing” that shows what needs to happen for pharmacist prescribing to expand safely, consistently and sustainably across the UK. The framework explores what sustainable funding, joined-up IT systems, professional relationships and clear clinical governance are needed to unleash access to pharmacy prescribing services that will benefit people using pharmacy services, the pharmacy workforce and stakeholders.

We will engage with decision makers and local commissioners to help define what needs to shift for independent prescribing to expand, and make best use of the rich resources of independent prescribers within community pharmacy. This includes how prescribing is embedded within emerging neighbourhood-level structures and how services can be developed and implemented.

Pharmacist prescribing in Scotland, Wales and in local schemes in England has proved popular, safe and deliverable at scale. Around one quarter of pharmacies in Scotland were offering ‘Pharmacy First Plus’ via independent prescribing by the end of 2024. Evolution of similar services in Northern Ireland would benefit many patients and local health care and free up capacity in hospitals, primary care and neighbourhoods and open potential long term developments, from treating common ailments to the management of long term conditions and optimising medicine use.

Pharmacy teams delivering the services can access a range of guidance to support their delivery of commissioned and private services including SOPs and stock availability. Support is also available for risk assessments, cold chain management and needlestick injuries.
