Dr. Jennifer Dixon-McKnight received the prestigious George C. Rogers, Jr. Book Award for her groundbreaking scholarship on African American history. The honor recognizes her book,We Paved the Way: Black Women and the Charleston Hospital Workers’ Strike which highlights the pivotal role Black women played in the 1969 Charleston hospital workers’ movement.


The award celebrates outstanding historical writing related to South Carolina


and the American South. Dixon-McKnight’s work brings renewed attention to grassroots activism and labor struggles, demonstrating how local Black women leaders helped shape the broader Civil Rights Movement and advance economic justice in the region.
