Winthrop University proudly celebrated the 50th anniversary of itsModel
United Nations program, a milestone that reflects decades of student leadership, global awareness, and academic excellence. The 2026 theme was “Parting Ways With Neo-Colonialism: Ensuring Global Achievement through Development for All.”. Program Director Dr. Jennifer Leigh Disney was joined by staff Katie Hartnett, student leaders Coordinator General Benjamin Byrd, Secretary General Ollie Whitfield, and Director General Taylor Jordan in organizing and managing the three-day event. The program has grown to include 600 participants, including 400 high school students, 50 high school advisors, 65 college students, and 20 faculty and staff judges. Supporters raised $25,000 this year to endow a scholarship in the name of Winthrop Emeritus Professor Dr. Chris Van Aller, the longest-serving director of the program. Highlights from the conference included three historical displays curated by
Louise Pettus Archives & Special Collections, a special evening reception for alumni and supporters, and keynote speaker. Jarrett James Lash, The United Nations Association of the United States of America 14th Youth Observer to the United Nations . The Model UN Program is present on 340 college and university campuses globally. Since its founding, the program has provided students with opportunities to engage in diplomacy, debate international issues, and develop skills in negotiation, research, and public speaking.
