SUSSEX PC Richard Bligh and probationary officers PC Steven Green and PC Stacey Soffe attended an address to conduct a routine welfare check in the early hours of the morning. Having received no response, they returned to their vehicle, and were then approached by a man showing signs of unusual behaviour. PC Bligh stepped out from the vehicle and attempted to engage in conversation. Glancing downwards, he saw that the man was holding a knife. The man swung his right arm towards the right leg of PC Bligh. PC Green and PC Soffe ran to assist PC Bligh. PC Green grabbed hold of the male and attempted to pull him away from PC Bligh, and with the assistance of PC Soffe, pulled him to the ground. Ensuring PC Soffe had control of the man, PC Green ran to the assistance of PC Bligh, immediately using his trouser belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding from the wound. PC Bligh later had ten stitches to the stab injury near his groin.
WEST MIDLANDS PC Matthew Evans was off duty when he fearlessly tackled a violent offender who had stabbed a man in a London street. On seeing the incident unfold, PC Evans did not hesitate to put himself between the offender and the victim, before chasing after the attacker as he attempted to flee the scene. PC Evans managed to take the knife from him and detain him until Metropolitan Police officers arrived. In the scuffle, PC Evans was bitten on the hand and was confronted with a hostile crowd, with some individuals even pulling at his beard in an attempt to prevent him from detaining the attacker. PC Evans was taken to St Thomas’ Hospital to receive treatment for the bite.

WEST MERCIA PC Craig Prewer received a call relating to a male heard to be shouting aggressively near to the Sewage Works in Hereford. Within a relatively short period of time the male in question was located, trapped in a water filled, disused pump station. The male was partially clothed and had been submerged in water for an unknown period of time. PC Prewer correctly identified that the male had been trapped for up to four hours and was very poorly suffering with hypothermia.
PC Prewer on his own initiative used cutting equipment he secured at the scene and went into the hazardous building which was only accessible via ladders to remove the male, he subsequently went back in to ensure there was no one else trapped in the building.
