2021 BRAVERY AWARDS NEWS

NORFOLK PC Alexandra Barnes and PS Kevin White were driving through Bacton when they noticed smoke ahead. As they got nearer, they were flagged down by a member of the public, who stated there was a house on fire and that two people were trapped inside. PC Barnes smashed the glass of the lounge sash window. PS White could see a person about two feet into the room and leaned in and, with the assistance of a neighbour, pulled the female out of the window. PC Barnes then called stating there was another person inside the

he managed to pull the female occupant outside on his own. As a result of his heroic act, PC Stocker suffered minor burns and the effects of smoke inhalation. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services at the scene, the elderly lady passed away.

for almost 90 minutes, as a Coastguard rescue helicopter was called to assist and transport all three to safety.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE PS David Cayton attended reports of a man having a mental health crisis. On his own, with back-up resources still some distance away, the officer tried to engage with the man, checking on his welfare. As PS Cayton entered the house and climbed the stairs, the man came out of his bedroom and pointed a handgun at the officer. While PS Cayton armed his Taser device, he heard a loud crack and felt intense pain as he was shot in the face. Taser was discharged but was not successful, and the man continued

room. PS White removed his body armour and outer clothing and climbed through the window. He found another female slumped in a chair. He picked her up and carried her to the window, where PC Barnes and a neighbour helped remove her from the property. Both females were taken to hospital, where one was placed in an induced coma but sadly passed away. The other female, who is 100-years-old, survived.

NORTH WALES PC Josh Stocker responded to reports of a house fire with an elderly female trapped inside. Arriving on the scene before the fire service, PC Stocker was aware that members of the public had been prevented from entering the building due to the ferocious heat and smoke billowing from the property. With no thoughts for his own safety, PC Stocker entered the burning building on his hands and knees. With much difficulty,

NORTH YORKSHIRE PC Mandhir Xherija and PC Steve Merritt separately attended calls to a rucksack that had been abandoned on a footpath near to a cliff edge. Alongside the rucksack, on a thin piece of cliff, was a mobile phone, leading people to think that someone had left them there before jumping off the cliff. PC Xherija did a visual check of the immediate area and over the edge of the cliff but could not see anyone. He then saw the arm of what looked like a person at the bottom of the cliff. Without any thought for his own safety, PC Xherija used an old fishing rope embedded in the side of the cliff to lower himself onto the rocks below and began CPR. Shortly afterwards, PC Merritt arrived and used the same rope to scale the cliff and help his colleague. The officers performed CPR on the male

to discharge shots into the officer’s face and arms. Despite substantial injuries and intense pain, the officer followed his training, and attempted to disengage and withdraw, retreating down the stairs. The offender followed, now also armed with a large hunting knife. In intense pain, and still unsure of what he had been shot with, or what his injuries were, PS Cayton re-engaged with the offender and drew his incapacitant spray, continuing with robust communications tactics. This was successful and the man was restrained and handcuffed by PS Cayton. It transpired that the weapon repeatedly discharged at the officer was a high-powered ball bearing pistol. PS Cayton was taken to hospital where he underwent painful medical procedures to remove a number of ball bearings from his face and head.

NORTHUMBRIA PC David Inskip and PC Elliot Sharp attended an address to execute a search warrant, when they found it barricaded from the inside. While the officers were able to get the front door partially open, they had difficiulty in creating an access point big enough to allow them to enter. As he leaned into the door, PC Inskip became aware of the male occupant of the house pointing a black handgun directly at his head. PC Inskip was able to force the door open sufficiently to gain
