2021 BRAVERY AWARDS

BRAVERY AT ITS FINEST 2021 BRAVERY NOMINEES

We are pleased to introduce the nominees for the 2021 Police Bravery Awards.

The actions of these extraordinary police officers will be celebrated at our ceremony in December, where the regional and overall winners will be announced. We are proud and privileged to recognise the incredible work of these courageous officers.

Without further ado, here are the very deserving 2021 nominees. PC Mathew Garfitt and PC Russell Mapley

BEDFORDSHIRE PC Matthew Garfitt and PC Russell Mapley responded to calls that a person was in the midst of a mental health crisis. They found the woman and saw her jump into a fast-flowing river. Attempts to use life buoys to reach her failed, so PC Mapley made the decision to enter the freezing water to rescue her. The current was so strong that PC Mapley struggled to bring the woman back to the riverbank, leading PC Garfitt to enter the water to provide help. Officers on the bank then pulled all three back to safety.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE PC Leo Clarke responded to calls from a father saying he was unable to control his adult son, who was suffering with mental health issues. The lone officer arrived on scene where the agitated son approached

him. Body-worn video captures the scuffle between the officer and the son, during which several punches were thrown towards PC Clarke’s head. The suspect was apprehended when further officers arrived on scene. PC Clarke returned to the police station where colleagues noticed him slurring his words and his eyes squinting. He was immediately taken to hospital, where he began to deteriorate and was unable to confirm basic identification details. He was diagnosed with an epidural hematoma (bleeding between the outer membrane of the brain and the skull) and underwent emergency surgery to stop the bleed.

had been exposed to and preventative inoculations against the risks the river water can carry.

PC Adam Woodland DS Joe McNally ad DS Dave Schofield PC Leo Clarke 30 I POLICE I OCTOBER 2021

CHESHIRE DS Joe McNally and DS Dave Schofield were first on the scene to reports of a woman jumping into the River Mersey. The officers identified the approximate area of the river the woman had entered and realised she was now under the water. They immediately climbed over the barrier and jumped down onto a small, muddy riverbank. They entered the freezing water and swam to the woman who was incredibly distressed and fighting with the officers to try to get back under the water. The officers managed to drag the woman along the side of the river and onto the bank, where the fire service had arrived. DS McNally and DS Schofield attended hospital, where they received treatment for the temperatures they

CLEVELAND PC Adam Woodland was attending what he thought was a routine neighbourly dispute. As he finalised taking a statement, the man he was with quietly stood up and walked into the kitchen. The suspect returned a moment later with a 12-inch kitchen knife and, within seconds, began to attack PC Woodland. The officer jumped into action and defended himself from the savage blows, which were aimed at his head. Despite the immediate danger, the officer remained calm and managed to restrain the suspect on the sofa. PC Woodland’s calm and professional approach saved his own life. The suspect was later sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
