NOTTINGHAMSHIRE PC Kay Yelland responded to calls that a man had been smearing blood in crosses on children’s heads. As she arrived first on scene, she was informed by the control room that they believed the suspect had also kidnapped a woman and run over a pensioner. PC Yelland saw the suspect’s car in a driveway and quickly moved her police car in front of his to block him in. The suspect got out of his car, shouting threats at the officer, before getting back in and reversing through a wall. He repeatedly rammed the police vehicle before driving off and was caught

drew and discharged his Taser, causing him to drop the knife. By now the hall was full of smoke and the officers were struggling to see and breathe. PC Waterhouse and PC Woodmansey were unable to breathe and so rushed outside to take in some air. The officers then returned to the burning building and, with the help of PC Willis, managed to drag the man out the front door and to safety.

STAFFORDSHIRE PCs Paul Waterhouse, Daniel Woodmansey and Joanne Willis disarmed a 25-stone man, who w as threatening to harm himself with a knife, before pulling him out of a burning house. PCs Waterhouse and Woodmansey were called to an address, following a report that a man had been involved in a domestic incident. Inside they found the man slumped on the living room sofa with a kitchen knife in his hand. PC Woodmansey holstered his Taser and tried to take the knife from the man, who resisted. SOUTH WALES PC Brian Cooper and PC Ryan Morgan responded to reports of a suicidal male having locked himself in the bathroom at his home. The officers attempted to engage with the man through the door, but he refused to open it and the officers forced it open. When inside the bathroom, they saw the male harming himself. PC Morgan deployed his Taser, but the man jumped and continued to harm himself. Taser was deployed a second time and the man was incapacitated. PC Cooper took the knife from the man and both officers immediately began first aid on his wounds until emergency service colleagues arrived.
SOUTH YORKSHIRE PC Luke Bugdol and PC Emma Addis were attending an incident in Rotherham and noticed smoke billowing from the stairwell from a nearby block of flats. The officers had concerns there could be occupants trapped. They attempted to put out the fire with fire extinguishers from their vehicles, but they had no effect. PCs Bugdol and Addis ran to the first-floor landing to get occupants out of the flat above, in poor visibility and choking with smoke. PC Bugdol forced the door to the above flat and safely evacuated the occupants – a female, a four-week-old baby and two children – by protecting them with towels. PC Addis carried the baby and escorted the female. PC Bugdol carried both children over his shoulders. The female and her children were unharmed. Both officers suffered the effects of smoke inhalation and were struggling for breath, coughing excessively and vomiting.
SUFFOLK PC Chris Clark was single crewed when he was dispatched to a broken-down vehicle on the A14. When he arrived, he found a male and female in the middle of the busy carriageway, who appeared intoxicated. PC Clark pulled up behind the vehicle and started to carry out checks. The man then sat on the bonnet of his patrol car. After this the man looked at the traffic and ran into the live carriageway. PC Clark immediately rushed into the carriageway and pulled him back on to the hard shoulder. The suspect tried to overpower PC Clark to get back into the carriageway, and in the process, nearly pushed himself and PC Clark into the live lane. PC Clark managed to restrain the male for nearly 11 minutes within feet of the live carriageway until back up arrived.

SURREY DS Ashley Eyden was off duty and driving home, when she noticed a lone female, who appeared distressed, walking towards the barrier of the M25 bridge. Concerned, DS Eyden knew she had to intervene and stopped her vehicle. The female was already climbing over the barrier and was now overlooking the busy motorway. DS Eyden immediately engaged with the female, taking the opportunity to grab hold of one arm. A member of the public also stopped to help and took hold of the female too. DS Eyden encouraged the member of the public to talk with the female as she flagged down passing cars to get further assistance. She continued to manage the scene, directing another member of the public to call the police
