LANCASHIRE

PCs Stuart Garnett, Joshua Hegarty and Lee Richards and Sergeant Andrew Gore had ammonia thrown in their faces while attending a domestic incident. After forcing entry to a property, they were confronted by the offender who threw the hazardous substance. PS Gore suffered severe injuries while his colleagues were in pain and had difficulty breathing. They were forced to retreat for respite but bravely re-entered the property and chased down the offender as he fled. Lancashire Police Federation Chair Rachel Hanley said: “The officers remained professional, calm and determined despite the abhorrent nature of this attack.”

LINCOLNSHIRE

PCs Sarah Luker, Natalie Eyers and William Robson confronted a man who was on a rampage in Boston town centre armed with a 10-inch agricultural machete. He ran on to a dual carriageway, causing traffic to swerve and come to a halt, before attacking a car in which there was a woman and her children. Officers deployed Taser but he continued to slash at PC Luker’s legs. The officers managed to wrench the machete out of his grasp and bring him under control. Phil Clark, Chair of Lincolnshire Police Federation, said: “This was an amazing act of bravery by the officers… putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the public in the finest traditions of the service.”

PCs Liz Cargill and Mark Wilson risked their own safety to rescue a young woman from the roof of a dilapidated building. They went on to the roof where there were two women and a man. One woman was dangerously close to the edge and would not accept their help. With the help of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, the officers managed to get her down safely. Merseyside Police Federation Chair Tony Fairclough said they had gone “above and beyond” the call of duty, adding: “It shows how police officers do much more than fight crime.”
