When the DVSA stopped carrying out taxi driver assessments in 2016 it also stopping providing wheelchair assessments. However as part of the Equality Act, transport service providers have an obligation not to discriminate against disabled passengers.

Since 2011 the Blue Lamp Trust has been providing driving assessments for taxi drivers and now supplies over 125 licensing authorities. Along with the driving assessment, increasingly licensing authorities are making disability awareness training a requirement of issuing or renewing a taxi or private hire licence. To meet this need, in 2020 The Blue Lamp Trust is launching a three-hour classroom course on disability awareness . It is an interactive, engaging and informative programme to develop the knowledge, understanding and ability of professionals within the industry to provide safe and secure transport to all passengers. The course is currently going though official accreditation by CPD and is aimed at: • Licencing authorities • Licensed operators • Hackney drivers • Private hire drivers • Suppliers/converters of type specific vehicles
