How to best start the New Year: with positive thoughts and messages; with negative thoughts and moans; with hope, or with despair?

Let us try to condense the previous year’s events and experience into basic reporting format, before going off on any tangents of rumour, scaremongering or speculation. So the facts are these: we’ve just had a General Election, and Boris Johnson has been voted in under his own steam, with a sound majority, as Prime Minister. Whilst we try to keep this publication politically neutral, the fact is that this guy means business, and his list of potential reforms (not to mention the B-word) are both impressive and commendable – if he can pull them off.

However, many are already saying that the party of his political persuasion is not particularly enthusiastic (there’s that British un- derstatement again!) as regards bringing about any sort of reform, impetus or get-up-and-go in respect of taxi and private hire legislation. Well, what can be done about this? Nothing other than shouting from the rooftops so that the right people get the message, that our trade needs help - pretty sharpish.

To that end, we present your New Year edition of PHTM – where we intend to continue spreading the word to whomever will listen. This particular issue is hard-hitting in many ways: the outcome of the Wakefield judgement, from two of the highest courts in the land, should make many councils sit up and take notice… read all about it on the front page and in Opinion.

What actually happens out on the streets of a major city at a weekend, when enforcement officers are ever-present and eagle- eyed at every turn? Check out our report on Liverpool, where PHTM was on the scene and on the trail of any licence holders – or punters, come to that – who might be out of line of a Saturday night.

We also introduce a newly-refurbished NPHTA: the national As- sociation that has a long history of drive, assistance, guidance and success, but which recognises the need for change and new approaches to the current problems faced by this industry. Read all about our new-look NPHTA inside: it’s all about strength in numbers. The message? Come and join us!

At the risk of turning this publication entirely into an Uber newsletter, we couldn’t turn out this issue without reporting on the (yawn) obvious move on the part of Uber London Ltd., which has lodged an appeal against the refusal of Transport for London to renew their operator licence. Business as usual, as we said last time… How the outcome will affect both the voters of the Mayor of London next May, or the many other licensing authorities who have previously licensed Uber Britannia Ltd., remains to be seen – and will of course be reported herein in future editions.

Meanwhile, we have our usual departments and features, with many welcome contributors: Unite, GMB, Know Your Rights, Taxi Law Explained, Medical Matters (largely thanks to Diabetes UK this time round… always worthwhile, especially after an indulgent holiday menu).

Speaking of which, we want to wish each and every one of our readers the best possible send-off into the New Year. Have a good read, and as always – we would very much like to hear from you about anything you want to shout about yourselves.

JANUARY 2020 LOVE IT
