Personal and professional safety engages delegates at Hire 2019 Conference
HIRE 2019 has been hailed a resounding success after HAE EHA’s annual conference brought together industry stakeholders and infl uencers for the best programme yet of speaker presentations, exhibitor stands and demonstrations.
The overriding themes of safety and career development were outlined in the opening addresses by HAE EHA Chair Brian Sherlock and commercial manager Paul Gaze alongside Scott Ball of HireTrain, and a full and fascinating programme followed.
First up was Dr Anne-Marie Imafi don MBE, who gave an uplifting presentation on the challenges of enticing women into Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers. Mark Noonan of
CITB then followed with an examination of how Pathways to Construction is expected to also encourage more new starters into this dynamic career path; and Dr Léa Cléret of Leadership Trust continued with how to hang on to valued team members. Frank Elkins, COO of Travis Perkins, rounded off the morning with a thought- provoking presentation on measures being taken to tackle dumper and digger safety.
The afternoon was kicked off by Chris Lucas of HSE who explained the link between inadequate welfare facilities and construction worker ill health. Chief economi st of Barbour-ABI and AMA Research, Tom Hall, gave a fascinating insight into the state of the UK’s economy as well as that of the construction sector; followed by Det Supt Neil Austin of West
Mercia Police, who had the audience gripped with his overview of ATM theft and the work of the National Intelligence Unit for Serious and Organised Acquisitive Crime.
Finally, there was a thought-provoking addition to the debates from Brian Parker of AFI Uplift and Paul Gaze of HAE EHA, on mental health policies.
HAE EHA chief executive offi cer Graham Arundell commented: “This was without doubt the most varied and engaging line-up of speakers we have ever had at our annual conference, and it was also gratifying to see many of our members exhibiting alongside the highly informative presentations.”
Two ISO certifi cations and a new Manchester hub for A-Plant
A-PLANT, the leading UK tool and equipment hire company, has achieved certifi cation for energy management systems and health & safety management.
It has been awarded ISO 50001 & ISO 45001 by BSI, the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB).
ISO 50001:2018 is the new energy standards certifi cation, which recently transitioned from ISO 50001:2011. It will support A-Plant’s move towards a greener and more environmental future. The new ISO framework will manage and reduce energy use and costs overall. It also provides an opportunity for A-Plant to increase sustainability management across the organisation by adopting and implementing the systematic processes required to achieve the standard.
Chris Ryan, head of performance standards at A-Plant, said: “Everyone at A-Plant has worked incredibly hard and we are proud to have achieved the new certifi cations of ISO 50001 and ISO 45001, which is a result of a collaborative

journey in partnership with BSI, since December 2018.”
The news comes just ahead of the opening of A-Plant’s biggest service centre to date in Chadderton, Manchester. The state-of-the-art Manchester hub is situated in prime position in the North of England at J21 Business Park next to the M60.
The fl agship centre employs over 100 people and is home to the company’s specialist divisions which serves construction, utilities, infrastructure rail and FM industries across the North.
Operating fro m the new hub are; A-Plant, A-Plant Rail, A-Plant Powered Access, Tool Hire Express, Astra Attachment Solutions, FLG Services and PSS Hire.
