ISSUE 172 May 2020
by Richard Hollis, Editor
MUCH has been written comparing our current predicament to the Blitz – which seems rather appropriate as VE Day approaches. It’s not a perfect analogy, of course, but it does nicely evoke a spirit of the nation banding together in a crisis for the greater good.
As we soldier on through the weeks of lockdown, it’s clear how unevenly our industries are affected. Our essential domestic waste services are, of course, still running, albeit with extra precautions to safeguard our workers. And the widespread re-opening of HWRCs is both imminently expected and eagerly welcomed.
And yet companies and waste processing schemes that rely on international travel have been severely disrupted, and several companies who process commercial waste from industries hit harder than ours have found themselves struggling.
What is emerging, however, is a new sense of ‘normal’. How many of us are getting used to our more digitally focussed, home-run lives and can potentially continue this way? How many of the adaptations we are making are sensible precautions we should keep, even when the virus has receded?
Please do get in touch and let us know your thoughts.
