Shadowers’ Choice winners 2023 The Yoto Carnegies Shadowers’ Choice winners were revealed at this year’s awards ceremony alongside Carnegie Medal winners Jeet Zdung and Manon Steffan Ros.

This year’s winners reflected the choices of the students and young people taking part in the shadowing groups across the UK and internationally. Final votes revealed that Ruta Sepetys picked up the writing award for I Must Betray You (Hodder Children’s Books), while Joe Todd-Stanton won the illustration award for The Comet (Flying Eye Books).

Shadowers’ Choice for Writing I Must Betray You tells the story of 17-year-old Cristian, living in a country ruled by a despotic dictator using fear and coercion. Every day is lived under the cloud of suspicion , hardship and

repression – but one day things get much worse for Cristian as he is faced with a terrible choice: betray his family or risk

losing everything he loves. The book is described as “gripping, intoxicating and uniquely involving, Cristian’s story will have readers asking themselves just what they would have done under the constant watchful eyes of the secret police, what they would have sacrificed to be free. Set in a knife-edge moment of modern history, the courage, hope, and violence of the Romanian Revolution powerfully frame this evocative thriller.” Ruta, a former Carnegie Medal winner in

2016 with Salt to the Sea, said that winning the Shadowers’ Choice Award for writing “not only recognise my work as a writer, but even more importantly recognises the history and those who experienced and because of the suppression weren’t able to raise their voice and share their story.” She added: “I am so honoured to write for the [shadowers]”

Shadowers’ Choice for illustration The Comet (Flying Eye Books) illustrated and written by Joe Todd-Stanton was chosen by shadowing groups for this year’s Shadowers’ Choice Award for Illustration.
