Yoto Carnegies – Get involved and help choose next year’s Shadowers’ Choice winners
E
ACH year the Yoto Carnegies works with schools, libraries and other organisations to create a unique
shadowing experience for young people.
The Shadowing Scheme and accompanying Shadowers’ Choice Awards provide an engaging way to include children and young people in the Yoto Carnegies – offering the chance to read, review and discuss long- and shortlisted titles before voting on their favourites. Group leaders are supported with resources, educational material and guidance to help run the groups.
Shadowing begins in March to coincide with the shortlist announcement for the Yoto Carnegies, and groups can share their experiences online through the Shadowing website. And of course, the culmination is the vote for their favourite books from both Carnegie Medal for Writing and the Medal for Illustration shortlists. The Shadowing Scheme is designed to be adaptable, allowing leaders to develop groups and activities to suit different needs. The scheme can be used to promote reading for pleasure, to extend able readers, or to help engage reluctant readers. Group leaders are encouraged to take a flexible approach to sessions.
The Shadowing Website provides a range of free supporting resources, including:
l Advice and ideas to support Group Leaders;
l Challenges set by shortlisted authors and illustrators;
l Reading Resources and teaching notes to accompany all the shortlisted titles;
l Downloadable publicity materials, including posters and bookmarks.
The Yoto Carnegies website and shadowers’ section has plenty of practical advise and ideas for leaders and potential new leaders looking to find out more about running groups.
Taking part
Groups leaders and the young people who have taken part in recent Shadowing events explain what they get out of it.
Group Leader – “I really wanted to take part in shadowing because I wanted to give the children a real reason to read. They loved the fact that the authors were in competition with each other, and they loved the idea that they could help to choose the winner.” Group Leader – “I decided to take part in shadowing this year as a way to encourage children to read more for pleasure. It kept the interest and
they all enjoyed the mixture of books that were available.” Group Leader – “[It] allows children some space to think about books that they might not necessarily read very often… It has interesting topics. It doesn’t patronise young adults, which I think is really refreshing. There’s something in there for everyone, no matter what type of genre you like or what type of narrative voice you like – you will find a book that you will enjoy.” Pimlico Primary shadower – “I
Like being in the shadowing group because I love reading books and because books make me feel calm.” Pimlico Primary shadower – “I would take part in another shadowing group because I love working with younger children and helping them by explaining all the words and telling them to look at the pictures and seeing what details the illustrator did.”
