A Different Kind of Freedom: A Romani Story is Richard’s latest book and part of Scholastic’s ‘Voices’ series.

anywhere with anything I have. I illustrated this recently with an idea for a new book about the days of the week written on a fast-food restaurant napkin whilst having a cup of tea having arrived in a town too early to go to a school I was booked to work in.”


Richard glued the napkin into a notebook when he arrived at the school he was working in. He used the napkin as the basis for a workshop that he’s now gone on to deliver many times. The exciting thing for Richard is the connection his ideas and stories provoke, saying: “All of my books get a reaction from children and adults and I never take that for granted.”


The talk around schools leads us on to considering the huge range of settings and organisations across the UK which Richard has partnered with. “I’ve worked with leading museums like the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester, Science museums and currently with Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children Books.”


Richard elaborates on how he has also worked with numerous schools, universities and community organisations across the UK and all over Europe, explaining: “It wouldn’t be fair to single out one or even a few of the hundreds of projects I’ve delivered, they are all amazing and they have all taught me something and made me a better artist. I’m constantly amazed at how brilliant the people, of all ages and backgrounds, I work with are.” Alongside organisations, Richard has worked with professionals in many different fields and with audiences from babies to older people. “I have a number of projects on the go at the moment and I’m always striving to deliver my best work.”


As well as working with such a wide demographic of people, Richard’s writing itself is well known and highly regarded for being inclusive, helping readers of numerous
