Fantastic worlds, amazing stories!

WELCOME TO our Spring-Summer 2021 issue of Pen&inc. and another opportunity to hear from some of the creative talents that are shaping a more inclusive landscape in children’s publishing.

From Diverse Book Award Winners Sue Cheung and Onjali Q. Raúf to explorations into the power of imagery in books through the work of Errol Lloyd and Satoshi Kitamura, we see how books can have a positive impact on young people’s lives. Whether that is by increasing empathy, raising awareness of difficult issues or through connecting with authors, illustrators and characters that represent their lives, Pen&inc. is delighted to be able to shine a light on some of the best books available now.

We look at how stories can engage young readers in all sorts of ways, with a special feature on the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration and the power of the accompanying School Shadowing Scheme. With a focus on illustration and how picture can bring a story to life, this is a real opportunity to give reluctant readers a way in to books.

Above all books are about escapism, and as the effects of Covid-19 continue to be felt we all need an escape route at times. For children who have suffered through closed schools and not being able to meet family or friends, books offer a break from that hardship. They are a chance to get lost in another world and forget about the difficulties we have all faced over the last year, even if it’s just for a brief moment.

Any book lover understands the joy a good read can bring, and now more than ever it is important to be able to share that enjoyment with a younger generation. This issue of Pen&inc. is packed full of inspiration, including shortlisted titles from this year’s CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals. As always we feature hundreds of new and upcoming inclusive and representative titles in our comprehensive listing guide, starting on page 35.

We hope you enjoy this latest issue of Pen&inc. and find some inspirational book choices to help young readers connect to great stories, images and characters. We’ll back in the autumn with another issue, but in the meantime have a wonderful summer and happy reading!
