This sense of joy, wonder and playfulness pervades the whole of his work and makes it near impossible not to smile when encountering any of his extraordinary work!

audience of two mothers with young daughters in a café, and filmed. Satoshi has delivered Kamishibai sessions all over the world in Japan, Latin America, Korea, India, Dubai and many more countries, and the reactions he sees from audiences are universal. He says: “One thing I learnt having met so many children in different countries is that they are not different. Their sense of joy and fun are the same. People are the same when they smile and laugh.”

Satoshi has three books in the pipeline for Scallywag Press – two reissues from the 1980’s and a third brand new title. Lily Takes a Walk and Captain Toby were first published in the 1980s as part of the Spooky Surprise series. The children who enjoyed them at that time are now buying them to use with their own children, and they have become firm family favourites.
“The walk” described to her parents by
Lily is carefree and full of happy sights, but the very same walk seems like an exhausting ghost-train ride to Lily’s dog Nicky, as his overactive imagination detects horrors and apparitions at every turn. In Captain Toby, a wild, night time dream imagines a daring nautical tussle against a storm and a giant octopus. Again, the normal and surreal are intertwined with a dash of adventure and
humour to give an unforgettable reading and viewing experience. The new title, When Creature Met Creature, rekindles Satoshi’s collaboration with poet John Agard. The book will be released next year, and explores how sometimes words enrich our communication, but sometimes they are not enough to convey deep emotions, which can be expressed in other ways. It’s a powerful text with stunning and epic illustrations. PEN&INC.
