Why join CILIP’s Special Interest Groups?

From a chance to become a judge for the most prestigious children’s book awards, to carrying out academic research into your profession, CILIP’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs) give members many opportunities. We hear from the Library and Information Research Group, the Community, Diversity and Equality Group and the Youth Library Group.

CILIP’s 20 Special Interest Groups (https:// bit.ly/CILIPSIGs) are all free to join for CILIP members.

When facing new challenges or questions, members can tap into the collective knowledge of committees and members of CILIP’s SIGS who may be aware of them and looking into solutions already. Ranging from the Library and Information Research Group’s (LIRG) work on encouraging librarians and information professionals to carry out research in the sector (it has recently carried out an assessment of the sector’s experiences, skills and confidence in taking part in research as part of pro- fessional practice), to the Community, Diversity and Equality Group (CDEG) setting out its stall, and the Youth Libraries Group (YLG) making preparations for the National Year of Reading. In the last issue of Information Professional we spoke to the Metadata & Discovery Group, the Public & Mobile Libraries Group and the Informa- tion Literacy Group. You can find more information about SIGs, diversity networks and regional member networks via insight columns from our KIM, UKeIG and School Libraries Group in Information Profes- sional and on the CILIP website.

Youth Libraries Group (YLG) – https://tinyurl.com/CILIPYLG)

The Youth Libraries Group (YLG), is made up of librarians working with children and young people. Our membership comes from a range of settings including public libraries, school and college librar- ies, and school library services.

The group is probably best known for its role in nominating and judging the Carnegie Medals, the UK’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book awards. It helps provide a jam-packed calendar with nominations, longlist, shortlist and winner announcements, the popular shadowing scheme and the re-conferral of medals at the YLG conference all forming a backbone to the group’s work. Alongside the awards and our annual conference, the group also provides monthly electronic news- letters with news and updates about books, reading and awards and a host of exciting giveaways from publishers.

We provide insights into new books and the work of authors and illustrators through our blog and produce an annual printed publication The Youth
