Join the celebrations for Libraries Week this summer

THIS Year’s Libraries Week celebrations are set to take place in the first week of June, and librar- ies, knowledge and information services are being encouraged to embrace advocacy and reach out beyond their usual users. Returning to the Libraries Change Lives theme introduced

last year, the week of events will bring library services from across sectors and regions into the spotlight. And in a bid to make sure this year’s Libraries Week delivers impact, CILIP is asking services to engage local communities and showcase activities to highlight the breadth of work that is happening to support users. This year will also see a particular focus on how services can help to build a sustainable economy – whether that is through improving health outcomes in NHS; helping new businesses get off the ground; delivering support for users looking to get into work or education, or in accessing benefits; supporting people in education at schools, colleges and universities; or growing the economy directly by helping businesses make the right, evidence-based decisions. CILIP Chief Executive Louis Coiffait-Gunn said: “Everyone working in knowledge, information and library services understands and sees how the services they deliver help peo- ple and wider society grow. Libraries Week is our opportunity to celebrate the difference we make and to tell the world how important and valued our work is.” Libraries Change Lives was chosen as an overarching theme

for Libraries Week as it encourages people to think about the positive impact of services. As with previous Libraries Weeks, the aim is to spread awareness and encourage more users to connect services in all sectors.

Advocacy and engagement Celebrating the impact of libraries is an important part of the advocacy work that is needed to help ensure services have a sustainable future. The more that services can demonstrate the difference they are making, the more likely they are to be seen as an integral part of the communities they service – whether that is public libraries are those serving schools,

universities, the health service, research bodies or business and industry. Every service that is making a contribution to their users should be talking about the positive impact of their work. And Libraries Week is the perfect time to remind users and non-users that library services are an invaluable part of community success. As part of this year’s Libraries Week celebrations, CILIP is asking services to reach out to politicians and local media with invites to visit and find our more about your service and the impact it has. This year’s free resource packs will include ideas on who to contact and how, as well as downloadable posters and social media templates to help you promote any Libraries Week events. Pritie Billimoria, CILIP’s Senior Marketing, Communica-

tions and Public Affairs Manager, said: “As the government looks to drive economic growth, close skills gaps, and level up local communities, libraries are quietly doing all three – and often overlooked. “From digital inclusion to business support, libraries are serving as free, local economic engines in towns and cities across the UK. Libraries Week is the perfect opportunity to showcase this work and advocate for your community.” Libraries Week 2025 takes place from 2-6 June and you

Have your say on membership and benefits

SHARE your thoughts on CILIP’s membership offer as part of an ongoing review of member benefits. An online survey has been created to help you tell us what’s working well and what you would like to see more of from your membership. The results will guide the development of CILIP’s membership offer. Liz Jeavans, CILIP’s Membership Development Officer, said:

“As part of our ongoing work to improve and strengthen our membership offer, we are currently conducting a review of our membership package to ensure that the benefits we pro- vide continue to be relevant and valuable to you.”

Summer 2025 Through the survey you will be asked about:

l Current challenges within the sectors we support; l training needs (if applicable); l value of current CILIP member benefits; l suggestions on how CILIP can support you with its advocacy work.

The survey answers are anonymous and your comments will not be attributed to you in any of the reporting. There is also an opportunity to win a year’s membership for anyone completing the survey – simply visit www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/CILIP_member_sur- vey before 30 May.
