E look forward to welcoming Louis Coiffait-Gunn as CILIP CEO and having the
opportunity to discuss with him our ideas for making CILIP more inclusive and accessible. Member Networks do a good job offering bursaries and grants for members to pursue professional development, conduct research and attend CILIP conferences. CILIP RPG, for example, is making up to £500 available towards the cost of attending the CILIP Leadership Conference.

CILIP Unconference ‘24 Speaker Profile
Our first CILIP RPG member profile this month is for Kirsten Elliot. Kirsten started working in public libraries after moving to England from New Zealand, where she had been a secondary school library manager and digital archivist in. Kirsten tells us that she sees CILIP RPG as a place for people like her: those not working full-time, for whatever reason that may be. She is exploring what is on offer through the Post-Lib journal and the residency programme for writers and artists. Kirsten comments: “As someone who identifies as queer but outwardly looks to be in a straight marriage, and identifies as disabled but whose disabilities are non-apparent, I often struggle to find my people. My journey into librarianship and career progression has also been different, due to chronic illness and a resulting low income. I’ve already taken up the generous offer of a free day pass for CILIP 125 recipients to attend the CILIP Unconference ‘24 in Glasgow this October and agreed to speak

Just as careers can take many different shapes and sizes, so can our ability to participate in continuing professional development. – Katharine Schoplin
there about creative writing, which I’m really excited about.
“My experience is that there has been a growth in those looking for part-time options, ways to work from home and/ or transitioning into flexible working arrangements. I am sure that CILIP RPG will be flexible to this as they’ve already shown with their poll last year about the name change to include more than just retired professionals. I look forward to the growing mix of people that will make up CILIP RPG and the opportunities to learn and support each other as we move through our varied professional experiences.”
Member Profile
Our second profile this month features Katharine Schopflin.
Katharine has been an information professional for more than 25 years and has worked across Knowledge and Information Management, Records Management and information governance in a range of public and private organisations and in consultancy.
Katharine joined CILIP RPG following some difficult years, where her own health issues and caring responsibilities made managing her career a challenge. She says: “Equalities legislation has not changed the attitudes of most employers, who

are very reluctant to make positions open on a part-time or flexible basis. “The profile of the older person in CILIP has changed since I joined the profession in the late 1990s. Then there were many senior roles across all sectors, and access to defined-benefit pension schemes.
“A huge number of senior roles for information specialists have disappeared and most of us over a certain age do not anticipate being able to afford to retire at the same ages that our predecessors did. CILIP RPG can provide representation for those members whose careers do not follow the traditional working pattern and/or whose daily work is affected by health and caring requirements. “Just as careers can take many different shapes and sizes, so can our ability to participate in continuing professional development. I would like to see CILIP RPG providing more support and advice about how to manage our careers in uncertain times.”
