H

ello to the CILIP community! I’m delighted to be joining you officially as your new CEO. I know I have big shoes to fill (from Jo, Nick, and all those that have come before) but I’ve been overwhelmed by the welcome that I’ve already received from many.

As I work my way around getting to know as many of you as pos- sible, I’ll be listening and learning about what you think we’re doing well and what we should do differently. I’m really looking forward to CILIP Conference in July, which will be a wonderful opportunity to meet many of you in person and to join those conversations – I hope to see you there.

I am committed to serving you including as an advocate for your work, highlighting the positive impact you make on people’s lives. I want to demonstrate how we can deliver even more positive change when we work together across the profession, fighting for further investment, recognition and support.

As you already know this isn’t a solo effort, and I am grateful for the hard work and commitment of our network of volunteers, including the invaluable leadership from our Board of Trustees and Presidential team. Not to mention the contribution from each and every one of our members. I am also really looking forward to work- ing with the amazingly talented team at CILIP, who deliver a huge range of activities and services that support the wider CILIP com- munity.

One thing that strikes me about this wonderfully varied profes- sion is the commitment to a common core of values including social justice, intellectual freedom, and evidence-based practice. I’ll share more soon about how all three have driven my own career in and outside of government, and why this job increasingly feels like coming home.

But today I just want to say how great it is to see these values so clearly at the heart of this ambitious, inclusive, and engaged community. I’m excited about what this values-driven and evidence- informed group of skilled professionals can achieve when it acts in unison and focuses its energy – using robust data about its impact – alongside a clear and compelling story. And what an amazing story it is. If knowledge is power, then I can’t think of a better group of leaders already working in our communities and across society to unleash the power of trustworthy information.

I am fully aware of what a privilege it is to be taking on this posi- tion and I also understand that it is a huge responsibility. I hope you will judge me by what CILIP does for you, as that will show you who we are, and who I am. I’m delighted to start CILIP’s next chapter with all of you.
