‘‘ Professional Registration

Professional Registration and you: recognition that is rewarding

O

VER the next few months Information Professional will be taking a closer look at Professional

Registration and sharing stories and experiences from past and present candidates. Professional Registration is an excellent way to open up career opportunities by enabling you to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and experience through an internationally recognised standard linked to CILIP’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB). There are three levels to professional registration, ensuring there is a starting point for every library, information and knowledge management worker regardless of where they are in their career. Candidates can choose to follow Certification, Chartership or Fellowship, ensuring anyone interested in Professional Registration can find their level.

Claire Robe, CILIP’s head of Sector Development, says: “Through working closely with our KM community we found there was a need and a demand for a separate strand for Knowledge Managers. KM Professional Registration was successfully introduced, and recognises the different skill sets within the sector and enabling KM practitioners to better represent their experience.” Claire says: “We were keen to recognise the different ways our members work, and it was clear that we could better support our members by introducing KM Chartership and KM Fellowship. It really enables people to properly demonstrate their skills knowledge and experience in

54 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL their chosen sector.”

The inclusion of a KM specific route to professional registration also includes the option to convert from traditional Professional Registration. This is not only useful for those already working in a KM centred role, but also for anyone making a transition to the sector.

Support from the start

Professional Registration is backed by a strong network of support – from CILIP’s refreshed PKSB, which helps candidates identify strengths and areas of development, to hundreds of CILIP Mentors who volunteer their time work with candidates.

Last year’s CILIP Mentor of the Year Keith Wilson describes professional registration as “a time capsule” of mentees’ careers. He adds: “Mentoring is stimulating and fun. I’m now self- employed and with two Directorships, so my experience has continued to be broad and deep, across sectors and current PKSB segments.

“I mentor irrespective of mentees’ workplace, specialisation or location. Over the years I’ve learned and benefited hugely from my mentees.” That level of support is available to anyone going through professionally registered, and provides a huge pool of collective knowledge to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Skills for the future A key aspect of Professional Registration is that it underpinned by CILIP’s recently refreshed PKSB. The latest version of CILIP’s PKSB was developed with the profession and employers, ensuring that real- world skills and knowledge provide a practical foundation to professional

development. It means that anyone achieving professional registration can demonstrate their value and impact to employers. CILIP will continue to work with employers and other stakeholders to ensure the PKSB remains relevant now and into the future.

The value of PKSB and Professional Registration also has international recognition, with several international Library Associations and major employers using it to underpin their research or form the basis of their own services and staff development. Claire said: “The PKSB is created by the profession for the profession. CILIP is proud to be the creator and guardian of that process. Other organisations recognise the breadth and depth of the PKSB and can see how it can support their workforce and sector development ambitions.”

Professional Registration is one of the best ways to invest in yourself and your career, helping to highlight skills, knowledge and experience, as well as any areas that need improvement. It can be an invaluable tool for anyone looking for a new job, helping to distinguish yourself from other candidates, and also allowing you to look at how well your skills would transfer to another sector, and if there are any gaps. It unlocks confidence and opportunities and embeds reflective practice as a key tenet of ongoing success.
