I
n his brilliant essay Thoughts on post-pandemic fatigue, resilience and talent management (
https://bit.ly/3tmJmz3), University of Leeds Librarian, Masud Khokar writes: “The first thing we, as leaders, need to do is to give clarity in what has ended from a pre-pandemic world and acknowledge the loss and transition that is associated with that ending. “While some of us are keen to move to a new world, most of our staff are still unclear on what is ending for a new beginning to emerge. Providing this clarity would be essential to move people forward with the change that is needed.” I know from my conversations with CILIP members in recent weeks that many of us are feeling the same way – that something old has come to an end, but the new ‘way ahead’ has yet to emerge. As a result, we find ourselves in a moment of transition. This year, we want to use the CILIP Conference in Liverpool (7-8 July) to bring our community together to explore what this moment of transition and renewal means for our profession. The theme of ‘renewal’ runs through our keynotes, workshops and sessions at Conference. I am delighted to welcome Professor Jacqueline McGlade as one of our three keynotes this year – as Professor of Natural Prosperity, Sustainable Development and Knowledge Systems at UCL, she will help us focus on libraries, knowledge and information at the heart of a ‘just transition’ to a greener and more sustainable future.
We’re also pleased to have been able to bring to the UK Sayf Al Ashqar, Secretary-General of the Libraries, University of Mosul, Iraq, who will share his experiences of renewing and re-launching their library services following a period of ISIS rule in the city. Closer to home, the brilliant Krystal Vittles, Deputy Chief Execu- tive Officer – at Suffolk Libraries, will explore her own experiences as a leader in an innovative and fast-moving service. Many of our workshops and practical sessions will focus on how you can use your skills as a librarian, knowledge manager or information professional to support your users and communities to imagine a more sustainable, more inclusive and more impactful future post-Covid. In time like these, when we are still processing the recent past and the near future is looking increasingly uncertain, we need to focus on the things that unite us – kindness, being together, sharing ideas and experiences, our common values, celebrating the power of libraries to change lives. This is what CILIP Conference is all about – a shared moment of reflection, renewal and ambition for the future. I hope to see as many of you as possible there!
