Professional Registration Candidates’ Group web area. You will find support materials here that are designed to get you started.
As a PR candidate you should start with the Professional Knowledge and Base (PKSB). This is designed to help you keep a record of your professional development. The PKSB (
www.cilip.org. uk/PKSB) outlines the broad range of knowledge and skills that are required across the information profession. This may appear daunting but you should just look for those areas you identify as being significant for your development at this stage of your career. As you pro- gress through your career other areas will become important at a later date. Use the PKSB to assess your current level of development and set out what you wish to achieve and at what level. This will help you form a personal development plan for your period of registration. Remember the PKSB is designed to be a living document that you continue to use throughout Profes- sional Registration and beyond. Having identified your development needs and training ensure that you keep and record evidence as you go. After you have completed your period of training and development you will then need to prepare a 1,000-word evaluative state- ment demonstrating how you meet the three criteria set out above. This is your opportunity to reflect on the develop- mental activities you have undertaken.
July-August 2021
You then select supporting evidence to underpin the content of the evaluative statement and by extension the assess- ment criteria.
Planning and support
Creating a portfolio for professional registration does take time and effort but it is not onerous. It is about setting goals and collecting and collating material over a period of time. Planning your development and then capturing the event or activity as you go spreads the workload and at the end of your chosen period you will have the basis of your portfolio. These can then be pulled together using the evaluative statement to create your portfolio. Having a plan and mapping out what you’d like to achieve will ensure timely delivery of a portfolio for professional registration. To support you in this process there is the Professional Registration Candidates’ Group web area where you will find an online forum, giving you the opportunity to talk to others working towards Profes- sional Registration. You will also get access to sample portfolios and the opportunity to link in to social media networks to share good practice.
Although optional you can decide to have a Professional Registration Career Mentor who can support you throughout the process and help you think and plan your career development.
Professional Registration Support Officers are also available to provide train-
ing and advice to CILIP members working towards PR. They deliver portfolio building sessions and workshops for PR candidates which are advertised on the CILIP website and through the Candidates’ Group area. National webinars led by CILIP staff and Professional Registration Assessors occur during the year and should you have any further queries CILIP member services are available 2
. A development path
A great place to start is by exploring the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base as it will help you to pick out some of the areas you might like to develop in. If you are finding it tricky to pick out topics, try to imagine where you’d like to see yourself in the next three-five years. How do you see your career progressing? What sort of responsibilities might you want in your existing job? Or what sort of job role do you aspire to?
You could also start noting down the different activities you’ve undertaken in a work diary or log. If you’ve started working with the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base, this will enable you to organically grow some great evidence for your future application. It’s also an opportunity to practice reflective writing, which is an important aspect of Professional Regis- tration. When noting down activities, try and capture your own views and opinions. This will help you to explore your learning and gain self-knowledge, which will you
