Library CSI

A FORENSIC Research Librarian has been hired to maintain the first permanent forensic science public library in the United States. The new online public library is a project by the Global Forensic and Justice Centre at the Florida International Universi- ty. Its new Forensic Research Librarian, Jeff Teitelbaum, said “The Research Forensic Library will be designed as a user-friend- ly, one-stop-shop research resource for everyone from the enthusiast to laboratory leaders.”

Its archive includes forensic science pio- neer Edmond Locard’s exchange principle “every contact leaves a trace” and aims to make it easier to determine what research is reputable, what is peer-reviewed, and what can be expanded upon.

Suffolk Libraries’ bumper year for new premises

SUFFOLK Libraries has opened two new library buildings this year, one in Saxmundham and another in Mildenhall – and it is also expecting to open another two: one in South- wold, another in Needham Market. The first, the Mildenhall Hub, has been recognised as a significant project in the Government’s national One Public Estate Programme. As well as funding from West Suffolk Council, it has also come from the Department for Education, Suffolk County Council, Academy Transformation Trust, Sport England and Suffolk Police. This includes a new school and leisure provision giving residents multiple services in one journey. Alongside environmental and economical savings, library customers will benefit from a larger library facility. Suffolk Libraries said “opening times will be increasing significantly to reflect the library’s key role at the centre of the Hub, with staff acting as Hub hosts advisors and helping to welcome visitors to the building. Once fully up and running the library will increase its weekly opening hours from 68 to over 100 and will be open seven days a week”. Bruce Leeke, Chief Executive of Suffolk

Libraries, said: “It’s really exciting to be opening a new library in the heart of this fantastic new facility and our customers will benefit from the longer opening hours and the chance to access all these services under one roof. Since then the Suffolk County Council project to redevelop its Street Farm Road site in Saxmundham has been completed and this includes a new library, also along- side other community facilities. The new

library will have more space for events and activities and will allow the library to return to providing a full service to cus- tomers, such as PC use and browsing. Councillor Richard Smith MVO, Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Eco- nomic Development, Transport Strategy, and Waste, said: “The library sits within the building complex, now known as ‘The Saxmundham Hub’ which will also be the new home to the Fromus Community Centre run by Saxmundham and District Community Interest Company (CIC) and Leading Lives.” Stephen Palmer, Chair of the Saxmund- ham and District CIC said: “We are delighted to see the new library opening its doors to the public following a major investment in the town. The new facili- ties will be a major uplift to the services on offer and will complement the other community-based activities which are expected to open at the hub over the next few months.”

The exterior of another new hub, includ- ing a hospital as well as a new Southwold library has also been finished. SouthGen, a community group formed to prevent the hospital from being demolished, has 477 members who will each own a share in the community hub after fundraising around £500,000 for the scheme, with the project also attracting £1million in grants.

The fourth project is Needham Mar- ket library which is also set to move to a new and improved site in a project that includes a school, new homes and visitor centre.
