Why it’s never too early to think about Professional Registration
For those working or volunteering in the information profession and who wish to be recognised for their skills and knowledge, Professional Registration (PR) provides the platform to demonstrate and be recognised. It is widely recognised and respected and strengthens your CV, helping to open up new opportunities. Professional Registration Panel Chair Alan Brine and Vice-Chair Chris Ash guide us through the process – whatever stage you’re at in your career.
THERE are three levels to PR: Certifi- cation, Chartership and Fellowship, and the option to revalidate annually. There are no barriers to entry, you can apply for any professional registration level directly or use the levels as career development stages as you progress in the profession.
The Professional Registration schema is divided into three key strands which are embedded within and form the basis of evaluation across Certification, Chartership and Fellowship1
. These are:
1. Assessing personal performance in terms of existing knowledge and skills and under- take activities to further develop them. You then reflect and evaluate progress against these initial goals.
2. Explore the organisational objectives of your service. Identify how you might have contributed to changes in service delivery or made recommendations for improvements.
3. Gain a broader understanding of the wider library, information and knowledge context. This might be through visits, read- ing, involvement in professional groups.
Professional registration demonstrates to employers, colleagues and fellow profes- sionals across the world your abilities, knowledge and experience. It shows that you are committed to developing and maintain- ing the knowledge, skills and competency
