C
alling all students and new professionals! This month’s issue of Information Professional is a celebration of the brilliant, talented people just starting out on their career in the information world.
Whether you’re about to graduate, are in the early stages of your professional life or have made the transition into the profession from another career, this issue is all about celebrating you and the contribution you make to our professional community. In this month’s issue, we feature the voices, experiences and per- spectives of students and new professionals as well as guidance and insight for people just starting out on their career. It can be challenging for new professionals to know “where next” with their professional development. Arved Kirschbaum, Library Graduate Trainee at Kew Gardens and Treasurer of the CILIP London Network writes about how CILIP’s Networks and Special Interest Groups can help keep you motivated and progressing. Many new professionals ‘find their way’ into the information profes-
sion via other career routes. In this issue, Emma Rothwall, Library Student at the National Library of Ireland, shares her experience of changing career from teaching to librarianship, the importance of skills and the value of being part of a professional community. Professional Registration with CILIP provides a career-building framework for thousands of librarians, information professionals and knowledge managers in the UK and internationally. Also in this issue, Chris Ash and Alan Brine write about how Professional Regis- tration can give your career a boost.
The times are changing for libraries, knowledge and information services. The introduction of new technologies, new formats and new user expectations are all placing pressure on traditional roles while helping to create new ones.
Our goal at CILIP is to support our members in building a suc- cessful career through these changing times. Whether through our quality-assured training and CPD, engaging with employers to create better-quality jobs, advocating on behalf of the profession or run- ning the sector’s leading Jobs Board (Information Professional jobs) – everything we do is about helping you to succeed in your chosen career.
Don’t miss the feature in this month’s issue about the benefits of CILIP membership and how we can help you get ahead and continue to grow and develop as an information professional. CILIP is your professional association and the team and I look forward to support- ing you in your career!
