I highlighted the A Million Decisions campaign and the importance of library and knowledge services to clinical staff and decision-makers within the NHS.

Y presidential engagements over recent weeks have mostly been in the UK – hotter

than many countries during the heatwave. It was already getting pretty warm in June when I attended the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards. It was a moving ceremony and fantastic to see that children’s literature is flourishing. The awards are often referred to as “the Booker of the playground” and it took me back to the days, 20 years ago, when I was a children’s librarian. The annual awards – whose winners are chosen by librarians with input from young readers themselves – are still held in very high esteem. CILIP’s annual conference in Brighton was a very successful two-day event in July, with plenty for delegates to see and do. I had various presidential duties throughout the conference programme, including co-hosting a session on the IFLA Global Vision alongside IFLA Treasurer Barbara Lison, Director of the Public Library Service of Bremen. I also chaired a breakfast session on how to approach my Presidential Commission to develop a new International Policy for CILIP.

Bame network launch

I was delighted to launch a new Bame (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) Information Professionals Network as part of CILIP’s wider workforce strategy. The aim is to provide a platform for networking and career development for librarians and information professionals from Bame backgrounds. We are at the start of this process and need professionals from Bame backgrounds to join the initial project board, which will set out the network’s parameters. So please do get in touch if you are interested and sign up at: www.cilip.org.uk/page/BAMENetworksignup

A Million Decisions

At the European Association for Health Information and Libraries

September 2018

(EAHIL) Conference in Cardiff, I was honoured to be a keynote speaker in a joint session with Neil MacInnes, outgoing President of Libraries Connected (formerly SCL). My presentation was about CILIP’s work with the health sector. I highlighted the A Million Decisions campaign and the importance of library and knowledge services to clinical staff and decision- makers within the NHS. They make a million decisions every day which impact on patients, families and carers. By law, those decisions have to be evidence- based, and libraries can offer support in a timely and cost-effective way. Between us, Neil and I had about 40 slides which were summarised cartoon-style by artist- in-attendance Fran O’Hara (see photo below).

Back in Warwickshire

In July, I visited several Warwickshire libraries in the run-up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. It was great to see so much activity and excitement. Although Warwickshire may seem an affluent county, there are areas of deprivation so this year we provided lunch at some of our events – because we know many children miss free school meals over the holidays.

Warwickshire is one of 10 UK/Irish library authorities chosen to pilot a new Google-sponsored Libraries Ready to Code Toolkit and I attended the first project meeting on 23 July. Google is collaborating with the EU Reading and Writing Foundation, and working closely with Public Libraries 2020, which promotes Europe’s 65,000 public

libraries and the wider contribution they make. This follows a similar project in the US with the American Library Association. Another highlight was the East of England weekend meeting on 18 August, held at a local college, where I met and discussed CILIP’s change programme with members.

Kuala Lumpur

In August, I went to Kuala Lumpur for the 2018 IFLA World Library and Information Congress, where I hosted the caucus meeting of UK delegates. I was given a mandate to vote on major issues on behalf of CILIP and its members – a big responsibility.

When I first became CILIP President, I wrote to library association presidents in other countries. Many were keen to continue the dialogue – so I had a number of bilateral meetings arranged for Kuala Lumpur, which helped build up links in line with my international presidential theme. I also had business meetings to attend as a member of the IFLA Buildings Committee.

August daytime temperatures average 32 degrees in Kuala Lumpur – but at least I was already acclimatised. IP
