As a Trustee of Wikimedia UK, the UK chapter of the international Wikipedia community, I am delighted to welcome Jimmy Wales as our cover star this month. Jimmy is better-placed than most to take a global view on the issues around fake news and misinformation and he speaks eloquently about the role of informa- tion professionals in promoting evidence and information skills as the antidote (pp. 16-18).

Speaking of matters global, it is also good to see CILIP President Ayub Khan providing an update on our new programme on interna- tional working for libraries (pp. 22-23). Ayub is freshly-returned from the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Kuala Lumpur, where he was able to strengthen our international connections with Library Associations and information professionals from all over the world.

Continuing the international theme, we also have an article from Mareike Doleschal about the German Bibliothekartag – the largest library conference in Europe (pp. 44-45). I was pleased to speak at the Bibliothekartag in Berlin on the subject of the Future of the Informa- tion Profession, and I can attest to the scale of the event – two entire car parks were given over to showcasing beautiful new mobile libraries!

This is an exciting time for CILIP. Not only are we launching a completely new, updated set of Ethical Principles for librarians and information professionals (look out for a feature on this in the next IP), but we’re also getting underway with our review of Profession- alism in the sector and preparing to launch our new Knowledge Management Chartership.

Our aim is to be the best membership body we can be for people working in knowledge, information, data and libraries, and it has been fantastic to welcome over 200 new members to our community in the past month. I hope you enjoy this month’s Information Professional, and as ever, do please keep sharing your ideas for how we can do more to support you in your work!
