IMO spoke exclusively to The Report Magazine in March 2018 as it celebrated its seventieth birthday. That same issue saw the publication of a feature entitled ‘What’s a yacht and small craft marine surveyor worth’? In it, Mike Schwarz urged surveyors to understand their worth as a professional and to charge accordingly.

2018 The year The year 2019

The start of the year ushered in the new Red Ensign Group Yacht Code.

Sadly, early 2019 also brought a succession of high-profile disasters at sea causing ‘hardened’ shipping journalists and experts to ask what on earth had gone wrong. The MSC Zoe incident, the Yantian Express Fire, the catastrophic transfer of cargo between Candy and Maestro in the Black Sea resulting in a devastating fire and many fatalities are just a few examples.

Hugo du Plessis HonMIIMS, who authored one of the first books on fibreglass boat construction in the 1960’s, passed away. His book, Fibreglass Boats, is still in print and available to purchase even to this day and is still regarded as a fine piece of work.

Capt John Noble stood down after many years as a management board member and Chairman of Administration.

The IIMS Inland Waterways Working Group was formed with the aim of meeting twice each year in the UK.

The IMO Sulphur Cap debate started to rage and gain momentum as the industry shuddered under the expected changing responsibilities. Regular articles on the topic appeared.

Capt Zarir Irani takes up the role of IIMS President succeeding Adam Brancher.

The first 24-hour, online marathon Marine Surveying International Fest was conceived and delivered to surveyors around the world.

March saw the Institute launch the innovative Marine Surveyor Search App, which is starting to gain real traction in the sector.

The Marine Surveyor Trailblazer Apprenticeship scheme, which IIMS played a leading role in shaping and developing, received approval and UK government funding.

IIMS began its quest to purchase the freehold of Murrills House from its landlord as the Institute’s permanent home. The June Report Magazine featured a series of articles about the extraordinary history of this 500-year-old, former manor and farmhouse.

The UAE Branch celebrated its tenth anniversary since formation at a lavish 6th

biennial conference in

November aboard the famous QEII ship in Dubai.

The United Kingdom has become one of the best locations for wind power in the world and is considered to be the best in Europe. In 2016, wind power first surpassed coal in UK electricity generation. Wind power contributed 18% of UK electricity generation in 2018 and in the first quarter that year surpassed nuclear power generation for the first time. Wind power delivers a growing percentage of the electricity of the United Kingdom

and by the end of December 2019, it consisted of 10,267 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of over 22 gigawatts - 13,532 megawatts of onshore capacity and 8,483 megawatts of offshore capacity.

And just before confining the 2010s to memory for good, away from the surveying and shipping world, this lot was still unheard of - Apple iPad tablets; Uber taxis; Snapchat; Facetime; The Selfie Stick; Amazon Alexa; Fitbits; 4G data networks; YouTube Blogger; Restaurant deliveries and Driverless cars. And neither did these job titles exist - Cryptocurrency Manager, Internet Influencer, Data Scientist, Drone Pilot and Podcast Producer!

Well looking back what a decade it was. So much change and innovation yet overshadowed by some of the worst tragedies at sea imaginable. Never forget those who sacrificed their lives at sea in the 2010s in pursuit of their livelihood or for pleasure. How will things look one wonders when we cast our eyes back in ten years’ time to review the ‘roaring twenties’?
