CEO Chat (continued)

The first is the unveiling of Geoff Waddington as your new President for the next two years, who has taken over from Capt Zarir Irani. There is a more detailed report in the coming pages. The Annual General Meeting held on 16th June was unlike any held before by the Institute. The technology held up well and those who joined online will have heard reports from the outgoing and incoming Presidents. My hearty thanks to Zarir for his efforts and unwavering contribution over the past two years as President. And my congratulations to Geoff for achieving this milestone - I look forward to working with you.

The second item I wanted to mention demonstrates the growing authority with which IIMS is seen around the world and is in relation to the recently published Australian Senate report into the performance of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. At over 100 pages it is a hefty tome digging deep into the organisation, its structure and culture. Bizarrely, IIMS was the only marine surveying organisation brave enough to raise their heads above the parapet to make a detailed submission to the enquiry. The IIMS submission raised members concerns as to the direction and delivery of AMSA’s services for domestic commercial vessels. The report widely agrees with our concerns and the IIMS evidence is extensively quoted in the report. If members ever wondered what else IIMS does, this is an excellent example of how we can bring pressure to bear in high places. I am grateful to Past President, Adam Brancher, who has helped steer things in Australia on my behalf.

Keep safe and well.

Mike Schwarz, Chief Executive Officer
