Report on IIMS London Conference 2019
Great venues. Brilliant speaker content on a range of relevant surveying topics. Meeting old friends and colleagues. Excellent food and the odd beer or two. What’s not to like about an IIMS London Conference with the added benefit of an eCMID AVI seminar? Admittedly the incessant rain was unfortunate and the train strike that affected some of us totally uncalled for. Big thanks to Constellation Marine Services, the main sponsor.
As well as real time delegates, a number had chosen to join Conference online. Day
one was unashamedly biased
towards commercial ship surveyors with day two lending itself to both commercial and small craft surveyors. There were firm reminders on the first day of the importance of doing the basics well. According to one presenter - Neale Rodrigues - some surveyors complete their
reports without having properly
read and understood the brief. Hearing from a representative of the MCA was encouraging too. And to listen to Bas Edmonds speaking openly and honestly about the challenges the agency faces was encouraging.
The Conference Dinner was great fun, set in the splendour of the Georgian 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, home of the British Academy. Capt Andrew Moll, MAIB CEO, entertained guests with his anecdotes. Three new Honorary members were announced and awarded to Carey Golesworthy (Honorary Member and not present), Peter Harris (Honorary Member) and Capt Nick Sloane (Honorary Fellow).
